FLOOD RISK ENGINEER

Job description
Full-Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent
Play a key role in keeping the people and businesses of Leicester safe from flood risk and address the challenges of climate change.
Leicester is an expanding highly urbanised city which sits in a valley containing the River Soar. As one of the top 10 cities in the UK, at risk of flooding from surface water, directly from rainfall, we provide modern ways of managing flood risk to keeping the city safe. We use innovative methods to manage surface water through planting trees and creating green spaces. Our strategy for tackling the Climate Emergency confirms our commitment to taking the urgent action needed to create a low-carbon, fair and resilient city. As part of the strategy, we are moving towards sustainable drainage to slow down and store rainwater, so that new developments do not add to flood risk. Join our small yet friendly Flood Risk and Drainage Team to manage flood risk from ordinary watercourses and maintain our network of highway drainage as well as supporting our highways winter maintenance service.
This is a full-time, permanent position working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. Based at Leycroft Road, you’ll have the flexibility to work from home. We provide training and development opportunities therefore we would welcome applications from graduates who are looking to kick start their career in flood risk management. Ideally, you’ll have a degree in Geography, Geology or similar environmental degree or have a foundation degree in Flood and Coastal Engineering.

Responsibilities:

You’ll deal with enquiries from developers, consultants, and members of the public, and provide technical advice and guidance on drainage and flood risk. You’ll respond to submitted planning applications on behalf of the Lead Local Flood Authority with respect to flood risk and encourage sustainable drainage of new development sites. Working with colleagues in our planning, highways, and other teams within the council, you’ll liaise with the Environment Agency, Severn Trent Water as well as consultants and developers.
