University Legal Counsel is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term FOIP Advisor for approximately 13 months.
Reporting to the Manager, FOIP, this position is responsible for processing formal requests for access to information in accordance with applicable legislation and within legislated timelines. The position is also responsible for providing advice and direction to the University on matters relating to the protection of privacy, and the security of confidential information.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Respond to requests for access to information, requests for correction of personal information, and complaints with respect to the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Liaise with third parties and other public bodies, make recommendations on the disclosure of information, and identifying issues with respect to the disclosure of information.
  • Provide advice and information on matters relating to access, privacy, proactive disclosure of information, and compliance with the FOIP Act and HIA.
  • Provide University units with direction and advice when initiatives involving the collection, use or disclosure of personal information are being designed and developed.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments.
  • Deliver training for staff on topics relating to the FOIP Act.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • University degree in a related discipline or a combination of education, training and significant experience in access and privacy legislation. IAPP certification is an asset.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the post-secondary educational institution culture and organizational structure.
  • Effective project management, analytical, problem solving and negotiation skills. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills. Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Effective team skills such as facilitation, listening, conflict management, creativity, and problem solving.
  • Examines the ‘big picture’ and develops the best approach to the situation - open to alternative approaches and does not necessarily rely on established solutions.
  • Flexible, adapts to changing rules, regulations and legislation.
  • Demonstrates lateral thinking; makes connections, recognizes links between different issues.
  • Handles interruptions and distractions effectively and changes plans, schedules, and priorities on short notice.
