Description:

NSF is a leader in Food Safety inspections and certification in the Food Industry. The Africa head office is based in Stellenbosch, operating throughout the continent helping retail organizations set standards, understand expectations, change behaviour, and ensure public health through periodic food safety audits and inspections of food handling sites to customer prescribed requirements.
We have an opening for a Food Technologist based in Durban. Please note that only candidates based in Durban will be considered.

As Food Technologist, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Verifying compliance to corporate, regulatory, customer, food safety and quality requirements within allocated area.
  • Providing support to Convenience Operations and Sales teams with the required Food Safety Management reviews.
  • Collaborating with operations managers and other site leaders (stakeholders) within a region to build and foster an effective food safety and compliance culture.
  • Identifying and recommending effective processes to mitigate key risks and areas of non-compliance.
  • Identifying customer service failures in relation to in store operational processes.
  • Collaborating with operations on corrective actions and preventative measures (when required), as well as verifying that corrective actions were completed and effective.
  • Technical reporting in relation to customer resolution processes. This could include the management of a product recall and returns process.
  • Customer complaints resolution.
  • Conducting root cause analysis on quality and food safety related concerns.
  • Participating in audits by internal teams and external agencies, as required or requested.
  • Conducting site visits with key operations stakeholders in the view of continuous assessment of compliance.
  • Conducting training and upskilling interventions when required.
  • Supporting the development of training material and related interventions in order to create sustainable process for skills transfer.

Qualifications: Formal degree/diploma in Food Science or Food Technology with at least 3 years of experience in FMCG (manufacturing or auditing) or retail (e.g. hospitality, restaurant). Previous audit/inspection experience would be an advantage.
Understand the relevant food safety legislation e.g. R638 and other standards e.g. FSSC 22000 and familiar with food and nutrition terminology.
Experience in conducting food safety related training (professional training qualification would be an advantage).
Passionate and motivated by the wide array of food and nutritional aspects (compliance, quality, regulatory, labelling activities).
Precise and rigorous aptitude with a critical mind-set.
Able to work autonomously, excellent organizational and planning skills and ability to multitask.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills to be able to interact easily with clients and team members.
Flexibility to travel and work from several locations (NSF sites, customer sites) in combination with home-based working.
Fluent in English and local language.
Full driving license and vehicle.
Willingness to travel extensively.
