JOB SUMMARY

We’re looking for an exceptional Foundation Scientific Software Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.
As a Foundation Scientific Software Engineer, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.
Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 22 hours per week and we will also try our best to consider those intending to work a job share. Our people are at the heart of what we do and we’ll do our best to agree a working pattern that works for everyone.
Whilst this is a fixed term appointment for 2 years, there is potential for it to develop into a permanent position.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

If you are unsure on where your skills and experiences sit between Foundation Scientific Software Engineer, Scientific Software Engineer and Senior Scientific Software Engineer (as seen in different adverts), you can apply at more than one level and you will then be assessed against the relevant sets of criteria.

  • Experience and knowledge in a mathematical, physical or computational science or related discipline at a graduate or equivalent level.
  • Good software development skills (e.g. in Python) and a demonstrated ability to learn and apply software tools and/or programming languages to solve software coding problems.
  • Software quality: A willingness to learn and apply good software engineering discipline leading to improved software quality.
  • Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to understand user needs and communicate complex technical information to a range of audiences.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work and collaborate as a dynamic and productive member of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver projects.

Responsibilities:

YOUR KEY DUTIES

  • Design and develop operational data services exploiting cloud computing technologies to efficiently produce forecasts and contribute to setting the strategic direction for production of data services
  • Support Met Office scientists to develop high-quality code and implementations of their research, lead activities to develop their capabilities
  • Influence and negotiate with stakeholders to understand their requirements and ensure that forecast services fully meet their needs
  • Collaborate with a motivated team to deliver projects that solve real world challenges.
