ABOUT MSF

Doctors without Borders (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation committed to two objectives: providing medical assistance to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion, natural and man-made disasters, and speaking out about the plight of the populations assisted. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need an irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. Today, MSF is present in more than 60 countries, where thousands of MSF doctors, nurses, logisticians, water and sanitation experts, and other medical and non-medical professionals work together to bring essential health services to people caught in humanitarian crises.
MSF SA’s fundraising department is responsible for raising private funding, predominantly from individuals via mass marketing campaigns or one-to-one strategies, but also from corporations, Trusts, Foundations and Legacy, to support our humanitarian mission and our activities in the Southern African region.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree preferential; minimum of a graduate degree essential
  • 3 – 5 years experience in a similar position (FR Director, or Deputy Director, or Head of a Fundraising Unit)
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategic and business plans
  • 5+ years in different marketing areas (online, offline, general media, branding and communication)
  • Knowledge of the fundraising environment and of a range of techniques and disciplines which will support the cost-effective generation of income for MSF Southern Africa
  • 5+ years in leadership management
  • MSF experience preferred but not essential

Responsibilities:

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Develop and manage the implementation of MSF-SA’s fundraising strategy through the team’s direction to maximize the contribution of continuous resources to the MSF Movement. The role is to develop and implement a strategy to generate nett income, aiming to meet or surpass a nett income target in line with MSF’s fundraising mission and principles. To increase the return on investment of the actions, ensure the sustainability of the fundraising actions in the long term, diversify the channels, and adapt them to the South African society profile.
Reporting to the General Director and working with MSF Southern Africa Fundraising team, international office team and movement-wide colleagues in a similar position. Direct report team: 1 acquisition manager, one retention and loyalty manager, one database manager, one head of philanthropy and one business intelligence analyst.
