IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED, YOUR APPLICATION MUST CLEARLY EXPLAIN HOW YOU MEET THE FOLLOWING (ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS)

Enrollment as a MSc student in the Department of Geography, University of Victoria (provisional acceptance is acceptable)
Completion of at least one class in terrestrial ecology
Completion of a class in paleoecology
Completion of a class in computational genomics
Degree equivalency
Experience developing a pollen reference collection for Quercus garryana meadow species
Experience in Garry oak restoration
Experience in research and fieldwork planning

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will conduct research on a lake sediment cores from sites located in the historical distribution of oak meadow ecosystems. Analyses will include conducting magnetic susceptibility measurements, sampling for pollen, sampling for radiocarbon-14 and lead-210 dating, and pollen tabulation. This will be followed by high resolution sampling, processing and analyses of pollen and charcoal from selected intervals based on the previous analyses. Data management will be required, including use of spreadsheets and R software.
