Job Description
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Gastroenterologist within the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. This is a new post to support increased demand for our secondary and tertiary care services, and forthcoming expansion of our endoscopy department. Applicants with sub-specialty interests are very much encouraged to apply and there are opportunities to support and enhance services across the breadth of Gastroenterology. o
You will join an enthusiastic and cohesive team of 14 Consultant Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists working in one of the largest acute hospitals in the country, serving a catchment population of approximately 675,000 people.
The new University of Portsmouth Medical School opens in September 2024 and there are excellent opportunities for teaching and clinical research.
Portsmouth provides easy access to beautiful countryside including the South Downs and New Forest National Parks. There are excellent seaside and sailing facilities and the city is only an hour and a half from central London. The area offers all the lifestyle opportunities of metropolitan, rural and coastal life.
The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003. Applicants should be on the GMC specialist register via CCT, CESR or European Community Rights.

Applicants, who for personal reasons, wish to job share/work part-time are welcome to apply.
The role will comprise a mixture of outpatient clinical work, endoscopy and in-patient gastroenterology, with supporting professional activity time. The successful candidate will join a team of 14 consultants with a wide range of specialist interests including advanced endoscopy, IBD, clinical nutrition, hepatology, ERCP/EUS and upper GI therapeutics. They are supported by 7 registrars and teams of clinical nurse specialists in IBD, Hepatology, Nutrition and Endoscopy. Candidates with a wide-range of sub-specialty interests will be considered for this post as there are opportunities to support and develop services across the breadth of Gastroenterology. Provision of ERCP and / or EUS is not a requirement, but it may be possible for this to be included for those with a pancreatobiliary sub-specialty interest.
This post will include a commitment to in-patient care of specialty patients on an approximate 1:5 basis (currently 3 week blocks). Accreditation in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology is essential, although the commitment to general medicine is limited to management of small numbers of out-lying general medical patients on the Gastroenterology wards. This post will include a commitment to the Gastroenterology / out of hours endoscopy rota (currently 1:8), which delivers a 7-day emergency out-of-hours endoscopy/gastroenterology service, including weekend / bank holiday review of selected in-patients.

Participation in research and innovation is encouraged, building on the existing strong clinical research portfolio in Hepatology and Endoscopy within the department. The new University of Portsmouth Medical School opens in September 2024 and there are excellent opportunities for teaching, both at undergraduate and post-graduate level.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT in Gastroenterology (proposed date must be within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights
- Wide experience of gastroenterology and general internal medicine
- JAG certified training in upper and lower GI endoscopy
