Description:
Reporting directly to the Chief Governance Officer, the General Counsel is a key member of the VBA’s Senior Executive Team, manages a multi-faceted legal function and provides authoritative advice to the Executive Leadership Team, the VBA Commissioner/CEO and a range of high-level stakeholders in support of the VBA’s role as an effective regulator.
Leading an in-house team of legal professionals to deliver high quality legal advice and a range of client services across enforcement, litigation, administrative law and commercial law, the General Counsel enables the VBA to fulfill its statutory enforcement, privacy and legislative reform implementation functions.
To succeed in a fast-paced regulatory environment, this role requires:
- Contemporary leadership skills and extensive expertise to confidently lead a multi-faceted legal services function within a statutory environment;
- Strong conceptual and analytical skills to assess legal risk impacting the VBA and provide complex, pragmatic advice and measured responses to the CEO, VBA Commissioner, Executive Leadership Team, Committees, Government and Industry;
- Experience developing and implementing risk frameworks, interventions, strategies and initiatives that support the VBA’s harms-based approach to litigation and enforcement activity across AAT and VCAT matters;
- The ability to take a diplomatic approach to ensure advice and decisions are reflective of VBA’s policy stance and withstand external scrutiny, appeal and media exposure; and
- Keen drive, solutions-based thinking and the ability to excel when navigating new legislation, unprecedented case matters and ambiguity with confidence and composure.
