Basic Function: Reporting to the General Maintenance Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing, with minimum supervision, skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance and repair of the physical plant. This position is also responsible for assisting and providing support in implementing the Strategic Plan.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess an active 456A (Welder) Journeyperson trade license valid in the Province of Ontario.
- Experienced in all aspects of the Welding trade including Arc, Oxygen and Acetylene and experience in the welding of all types of metal.
- Must have a minimum of five (5) or more years proven experience.
- Must be able read architectural, mechanical plans and schematic drawings.
- Must be able to read, understand and utilize technical manuals.
- Working knowledge of all codes & regulations affecting their work.
- Must be capable of meeting the physical demands of the job.
- Must possess unrestricted Class G driver’s licence valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record.
- Must have working knowledge of WHMIS legislation, the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Toronto Zoo Safety Policy.
- Must ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and in good standing. Copies of licenses and certificates to be provided at time of hire and upon renewal.
- Required to work shifts, holidays, and weekends as scheduled.

Responsibilities:
An employee in this classification is required to perform duties consisting of, but not restricted to the following:
- Repairs, installations & preventative maintenance of all metal components with the Toronto Zoo and out buildings.
- Assists with related maintenance duties.
- Prepares material list if requested for projects or work orders.
- Advises other units regarding requested installations or repairs.
- Must adhere to all health and safety policies as outlined by the Zoo, including use of all proper PPE.
- Reports to the supervisor the absence of or any defect in any equipment or protective device that they are aware of and which may endanger themselves or another staff member.
- Reports to supervisor any contravention of the Ontario Health and Safety Act.
- Ensures all accidents and hazards are reported to the supervisor immediately.
- Work in a safe manner at all times in compliance with health and safety, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) and Toronto Zoo policies and procedures. Perform all duties in compliance with industry standards including Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Occupational Health and Safety Act, legislated regulations, and recommended equipment/manufacturer’s guidelines.
- Follows all branch instructions.
- Attends appropriate training courses as required.
- Other related duties as requested by the Supervisor or their designate.
