Exciting opportunity to embark with MQ Health as we seek a General Surgery Fellow to provide clinical services in their 2025 program.

  • Attractive salary with packaging options, relative to appointment level
  • Part time (0.7FTE), fixed term for 12 months, commencing Feb 2025
  • Macquarie University (North Ryde) location

The Role
MQ Health is seeking two General Surgical Fellows to provide clinical services in the colorectal and upper GI surgery teams. As part of MQ Health, the role is responsible for the assistance and provision of high-quality clinical assessment, management and consultation to patients with conditions applicable to the specialty of General Surgery at Macquarie University Hospital. The role will also provide and participate in education, supervision and support to junior doctors in training and students and engage in ongoing quality assurance and improvement activities at the discipline, and program levels.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • Experience elective and emergency general surgery in a private hospital environment.
  • Be mentored and work alongside senior consultants in colorectal and upper GI surgery.
  • Be exposed to a wide range of complex surgical cases including robotic surgery.
  • Generate manuscripts and research projects;
  • Participate in research projects and clinical trials
  • Supervise and train students, residents and other Doctors in Training
  • Contribute to educational and research activities with MQ Health

About You
You will be an aspiring general surgeon, who is committed to clinical care, education and research. You will be keen to work in an innovative multidisciplinary environment and be passionate about providing patient centred care. You will have experience working within busy inpatient settings, while balancing supervision, teaching and mentoring of junior staff and medical students.

Key Accountabilities include (Not limited to):

  • Provide clinical service within the scope of practice as granted by the MUH Medical Advisory Committee and approved by the MUH Board to patients of MUH and the Clinic.
  • Provide a specialist liaison and consultation service to patients in conjunction with the clinical supervisor as required by other accredited practitioners who provide medical care at or in connection with MUH.
  • Liaise and work effectively with nursing staff, allied health professionals including psychologists, occupational therapists and other allied health staff involved in patient care including the broader care team.
  • Perform ward rounds, independently or with others such as junior medical staff and/or allied health staff, the admitting doctor and/or clinical supervisor(s), as required for inpatient care at MUH as far as possible within the normal working hours of the ward
  • In consultation with the admitting doctor, ensure appropriate arrangements are made for patients on discharge from MUH to maximise continuity of care, patient-centred care and good health outcomes – including timely and respectful liaison with patient’s family, carers and general practitioner as appropriate.
  • If required participate in an on-call roster (under the direction of clinical supervisor(s) or senior medical staff) and when on call, be within an accessible distance in order to respond to urgent and precipitous events.
  • Promptly advise your supervisor, admitting doctor or senior medical staff of any concerns you have regarding a patient’s condition or management
  • Participate in clinical quality activities – such as peer review, binational colorectal cancer audit, clinical practice audit, root cause analysis etc.
  • Participate in Discipline and/or Program Mortality and Morbidity meetings, Sentinel Event meetings, or peer review meetings and root cause analysis teams as requested by your supervisor.
  • Systematically review clinical performance of self and discipline.
  • If required, present at and represent MQ Health at relevant internal and external conferences, grand rounds, and similar sessions in support of advancing the academic mission of MQ Health.
  • Complete and provide evidence of Continuing Medical Education and Development.

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification and general registration as a medical practitioner in Australia and current registration as a medical practitioner in Australia [or ability to obtain – including English language requirements]
  • Documented experience in General surgery, and knowledge of and commitment to continuous improvement, evidence based practice and promoting a culture of safety, quality, innovation and best practice in clinical practice, teaching and research.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the patients’ perspective and ability to communicate key information to the patient and carers.
  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude for one or more of the following activities: supervision of students; delivery of education activities; research.
  • A strong commitment to multidisciplinary approaches to clinical care and ability to work as part of a team.
