Wessex Clinical Genetics Service is delighted to be recruiting to the role of Genomic practitioner. We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and highly skilled individual who has an interest in genomics and national plans for mainstreaming genomic medicine.
NHS genetic services are undergoing radical changes as we move to a national genomic medicine service and transform care for people with rare diseases and cancer. You will work with a high level of autonomy, taking delegated responsibility from the lead clinician under supervision of the Genomic Clinical Nurse Specialist. This really is an exciting time to be involved in genetics and genomic medicine.
This role will primarily involve telephone and face-to-face contact with patients and their families to consent to whole genome sequencing testing, ensuring they are able to make fully informed decisions about their care and also for their potential involvement in genomic research.

  • Support health professionals who are identifying patients with rare disease and or cancer for whole genome sequencing
  • Assist in implementing a genomics service for families with rare diseases and cancer to enhance the experience of patients
  • Coordinate and run participant clinics alongside medical services for consent and family liaison for Genomics testing, ensuring that families are fully supported emotionally, and if needed referral to other services.
  • Assist with the day-to-day management of Genomics team, ensuring appropriate cover and skill mix for smooth running of Genomics Service
  • Support other services to optimise integration with the Genomics medicine service
  • Assisting in training other clinical staff to understand genomic testing
  • Act as a role model and clinical expert at departmental level ensuring high standards of care and safety for Genomics participants.
  • Ensure accurate collection and maintenance of all data, using appropriate manual and computerised systems
  • Assist in the development of new initiatives and ways of working that will be improve the service for patients and their families.
  • Support the completion of legacy work form the 100,000 Genomes Project
