Description:

POSITION TITLE: GEOLOGIST - CONTRACT

Reporting to Senior Geologist, Technical Services, the Geologist will work collaboratively with the operations team to manage the ML/ARD characterization program for all construction earthworks activities. The Production Geologist will oversee characterization drill program and production drilling and build an ARD (Acid Rock Drainage) model based on PAG and non-PAG material. This role will direct in-field management of PAG and non-PAG delineation with the on-site operations team and off-site engineers. This position is seasonal, and the employment term is expected to be 5-6 months, depending on workload and construction season.

ACADEMIC/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Geology or Earth Sciences or Bachelor of Engineering/Applied Science degree in Mining, Geological or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Registered professional (P.Geo./P.Eng., GIT/EIT) with EGBC or ability to register in B.C.

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:

  • A Minimum of 5 years of directly related experience is required.
  • Mining experience is essential.
  • Demonstrated field experience with integrating geological data with production planning.
  • Strong computer skills including use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Access, PowerPoint etc.), GIS programs (ArcGIS); experience with 3D ore body modeling software is an asset.
  • Experience with digital data capture techniques and systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant BC and federal legislation and regulations (e.g., WorksafeBC guidelines, Mines Act, Occupational Health and Safety Legislation) is desired.
  • Must have past demonstrated experience in helping build a strong safety culture, as well as awareness of, and adherence to, all required health and safety best practices.
  • Ability to operate a 4X4 equipped vehicle in varying terrain and weather conditions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment or individually.
  • Practical field experience with exploration and core logging techniques.
  • Fast learner, motivated, outcome oriented.
  • Adaptable to change, ability to operate in less than perfect conditions and with less than perfect information at times.
  • Ability to work with minimal guidance (Must be self-directed).
  • Must be able to work a rotational schedule in a remote mining camp.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Skeena’s construction team to manage drill program on characterization drilling.
  • Act as the main point of contact for all ML/ARD sampling and logistics.
  • Obtain and document field level ML/ARD samples according to standards and deliver to Assay Lab for testing.
  • Work directly with on-site Assay Lab to supply samples and assign priorities and provide the Assay Lab a forecast of incoming samples.
  • Data analysis, interpretation, in-field direction, and record keeping in accordance with the ML/ARD Management Plan.
  • Contribute to geological interpretation of the non-PAG and PAG limits including data compilation, validation, integration, and 3D modelling.
  • Monitor all ML/ARD material movement and log all volumes.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of sampling supplies.
  • Communicate with supervisors regularly and report all material results promptly.
  • Identify PAG and non-PAG post-blast and compare data to original model.
  • Direct field personnel on proper segregation and removal of PAG and non-PAG material.
  • Train site staff including operators, supervisors, and field personnel in ML/ARD management plan.
  • Promote a safety leadership culture by ensuring that safety practices are followed in accordance with Skeena’s health and safety policies.
  • Actively seek opportunities to recognize health and safety hazards, resolve safety issues, and work to mitigate associated risks in the workplace.
