WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in GIS analysis and data management, preferably in the renewable energy development or utility sector.
  • Proficiency in Esri ArcGIS desktop software, including ArcMap, ArcPro, QGIS, and related spatial analysis tools.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and DWG files as well as familiarity with PowerBI.
  • Expertise using Google Earth and KMZ files, LiDAR datasets and usage.
  • Knowledge of Python, ModelBuilder or another common GIS scripting language is desirable.
  • Experience with spatial databases, data visualization, and web-based GIS applications.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

As the GIS Analyst (or Specialist), you will be responsible for managing and analyzing spatial data to support the development of TransAlta’s vast portfolio of renewable and conventional energy projects in North America and Australia. This role involves creating and maintaining GIS datasets, performing spatial analysis, and producing maps and reports to aid in decision-making processes. You will work closely with Resource, Transmission, Land, Engineering and the Environmental and Permitting teams to support all phases of the development of energy projects.
Ideally, this role is based at TransAlta’s head office in Calgary, or alternatively in Boulder CO, or San Diego, CA.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Collect, process, store, organize and maintain spatial data from various sources, including field surveys, satellite imagery, and public databases.
  • Create and modify GIS datasets; manage and maintain company’s GIS datasets; develop and implement GIS-based analyses supporting land identification and acquisition, surveys, civil engineering, planning, landscape architecture, public infrastructure, and viewshed analysis.
  • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and compliance with company standards and industry regulations.
  • Perform spatial analysis to support site selection, environmental impact assessments, and infrastructure planning, including the generation of buildable areas.
  • Develop models and algorithms for predictive analysis and optimization of power generation assets.
  • Analyze spatial patterns and trends to provide insights for strategic decision-making.
  • Create high-quality maps, charts, and visualizations to communicate spatial information effectively to stakeholders.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations based on spatial analysis and modeling results.
  • Assist in the development of web-based GIS applications and dashboards for data visualization and accessibility.
  • Work closely with Resource, Transmission, Land, Engineering, Environmental, and operational teams to integrate GIS data and analysis into project planning and execution.
  • Provide technical support and training to team members for field use of GIS tools and applications.
  • Collaborate with external agencies, consultants, and contractors on GIS-related projects.
  • Stay updated on the latest GIS technologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Explore and implement new GIS methodologies and innovations to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Participate in industry conferences, workshops, and training sessions to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
