The Opportunity
We have an great opportunity for a GIS Developer to join our team in either Perth or Sydney, this role will be responsible for the implementation and maintenance of Spatial Systems, as a team member of the GIS team at Vocus.
An ideal candidate would have previous experience in a GIS field as well as aptitude of a software developer, with enthusiasm for full stack application development following best practices in the field.
GIS Developer is mentored and coached by senior team members working as part of the common project. This is a great opportunity to advance software development skills in a commercial role with a GIS analyst background.

What you’ll be doing day-to-day

  • Development and implementation of custom GIS solutions including QGIS plug-ins, database components, APIs, and some web applications. Exposure to development depends on the skills of the candidate.
  • Communicate effectively to stakeholders and internal customers
  • Troubleshoot issues and to provide support and training to end users

What you’ll bring to this role

  • Knowledge and previous experience with geospatial systems such as QGIS, ArcGIS or similar. QGIS is preferred.
  • Knowledge and previous experience with Python scripting in geospatial context. Experience developing GUIs using TkInter, PyQT or similar library.
  • Software development experience using Python, following best practices in a commercial environment
  • RDBMS experience with MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle DB or PostgreSQL is required, PostgreSQL/PostGIS experience is preferred. Intermediate SQL skills including PL/pgSQL, PL/SQL, or T-SQL.
  • Knowledge of Git or similar version control system
  • Proficient MS Office skills, in particular MS Excel
  • Analytical skills and great attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

Desirable Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of Geoserver and OGC standards
  • Basic knowledge of GO Lang and Linux
  • Web development with JavaScript an asset, with some exposure to web frameworks like Node.JS, React, Angular
  • Understanding of and previous experience with full-stack software development

Qualifications and Education

  • BSc IT, Computing Science, GIS degree or similar
