Bishop Museum: Integrating Educational Resources with Bishop Museum’s Online Collections. The Bishop Museum holds more than half the world’s primary source materials related to Hawaii and the Pacific, encompassing the vast culture and biodiversity of the region. To make these collections more readily available to teachers and students, Bishop Museum is looking to enhance our systems to allow for the addition of educational metadata to sit alongside collections metadata. Educational metadata could serve as a powerful tool for organizing, accessing, and enhancing the educational value of museum collections and provide a platform for educators and learners to explore, engage, and make connections with collections and knowledge held within museums. This work will help inform the future development of Bishop Museum’s new online collections platform.

Duties:

  • Work with Bishop Museum curriculum specialists to document how Bishop Museum’s collections could be used for the development of lesson plans and learning activities in an educational setting
  • Help assess museum collections for use in educational resources following guidelines outlined by the Hawaii State Department of Education’s Hawaiian Studies Program
  • Work with Bishop Museum’s Informatics and Collections staff to understand the existing data model for existing collections databases to identify gaps in our ability to sufficiently document educational metadata
  • Assist with the digitization of collections for use in online collections including scanning/photography and data entry
  • Identify educational metadata fields, tags and descriptions that would best support the search and retrieval needs of educators and students wishing to use museum collections/primary source materials

Minimum qualifications:

  • Graduate students seeing a degree in Hawaiian studies, Hawaiian History, or Hawaiian language, especially with an interest in Museum collections and archives and/or an undergraduate degree in Hawaiian Studies, art, history, museum studies, library sciences, education or related field.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in high school or early undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
  • Strong writing skills necessary.
  • Basic understanding of databases and metadata.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Experience developing K-12 lessons using primary source materials.
  • Experience doing research or education in partnership with community organizations or non-profits.

To Apply:

Click on the “Apply” button on the top right corner of the screen to complete an application and attach required documents. Applicant must submit the following:

  • Cover Letter (Convey your interest in the position and how you meet the minimum and desirable qualifications);
  • Current Curriculum Vitae;
  • Copies of official Graduate and undergraduate transcripts showing degree and coursework to date appropriate to the position (original official transcript(s) will be required at the time of hire). Copies of transcripts must be attached to your application to receive credit for degree(s). Transcripts issued outside the United States of America require a course-by-course analysis with an equivalency statement from an agency having membership with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc., verifying the degree equivalency to that of an accredited institution within the USA. Expense of the evaluation shall be borne by the applicant.

Late, incomplete, or unreadable application materials will not be considered. Academic record/grade summaries will not be accepted. Diplomas and copies will NOT be accepted.
Please REDACT references to social security numbers and birth date on submitted documents.
If multiple applications are received from the same candidate, only the last one will be reviewed. Please do not include any self-identifying photos.
All items become the property of the University of Hawaii and will not be returned.
Note: If you have not applied for a position before using NeoGov, you will need to create an account.
Continuous recruitment; first review of applications will begin on September 9, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. For best consideration, applications should be submitted by September 9, 2024.
