SSE Operations Staff within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Grant Writer and Reviewer for approximately 12 months.
This position will report to the Manager, Research, and Inclusion, and is located at the University’s main campus. The Grant Writer and Reviewer is responsible for providing key support to enhance the quality and quantity of grant applications submitted by the School. This position works closely with academic staff, the SSE Research Specialist (Grants & Chairs), and the Associate Dean Research. The Grant Writer and Reviewer will also play a critical role in supporting researchers and administrators in securing external funding through the development, writing, and reviewing of grant proposals. Some evening and weekend hours may be required during peak periods. The ability to be on campus is required.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Grant Writing and Review
- Work with researchers to help them develop and write compelling grant proposals tailored to funding agency requirements.
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and researchers to gather essential project information and ensure alignment with funding priorities.
- Edit and refine proposals to enhance clarity, coherence, and impact.
- Provide detailed reviews and feedback on grant applications to improve content, structure, and alignment with sponsor criteria.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant institutional, ethical, and sponsor-specific guidelines.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to revise proposals based on review feedback.
- Stay up-to-date on trends, changes, and updates to funding programs and requirements.
- Proactively identify and disseminate relevant funding opportunities to faculty and researchers.
- Maintain a database of grant opportunities and resources, updating faculty and departments regularly.
Other Writing Requirements
- Develop written materials to support knowledge dissemination (e.g., proposals, reports, and other related materials) by working with and interviewing academic leads and interpreting their visions into actionable proposals and reports.
- Draft letters of support for various initiatives by connecting with and interviewing potential supporters and creating unique endorsement letters.
- Collaborate with the SSE Communications and Marketing Office to identify internal news stories related to SSE strategic initiatives.
- Develop written internal communications for the SSE Dean’s Office as requested.
- Prepare updates to the SSE Research website.
- Review and edit documentation for consistent messaging, formatting, grammar and compliance with best practices and processes.
- Provide ad-hoc writing support to individual academics to support various ongoing initiatives and opportunities across the school.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:
- Post-secondary degree; Masters degree is an asset.
- Minimum two years’ experience writing and editing in an academic environment.
- Experience coordinating Canada’s Tri-Council or similar governmental agencies’ grant applications.
- Proven ability to work independently and meet timelines.
- Strong writing and research skills required.
- Ability to work well with diverse individuals and teams.
- Excellent analytical, communications and interpersonal skills required.
- Must be comfortable in an academic settings.
- Professional demeanor required.
- Excellent people skills required.
- Highly effective time management and project management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office or similar software applications
- Ability to work well under pressure required.
