JOB SUMMARY

Ottawa Public Library (OPL) provides accessible, innovative library and information services throughout the City of Ottawa, that meet the unique needs of diverse communities, delivered through a range of vehicles and reflecting a citizen-centred approach. The Communications unit is responsible for communications programs, services, policies/procedures and initiatives, including capital projects; writing, editing and design of content for the public (including advertising, marketing and promotions); and communications initiatives directly related to OPL Board Legislative Agenda and issues management/strategic matters.
You: Design, prepare and produce publications and publicity materials for internal and external audiences; help ensure visual identity and consistent look and feel to support OPL brand, prepare templates for Library posters, handouts, signage, etc., create, prepare and order communications products promotional items, advertising, signature images for various digital and print publishing and serve as the Library’s photographer and videographer.
Work is performed within the context of the policies and framework of the Library corporate culture as embodied in the Mission Statement, Core Values, Customer Experience Guidelines and the Canadian Federation of Library Association position statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion, with particular emphasis on providing customer service excellence.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 3 year university or community college program in graphic design or related field
Minimum of 3 years of experience in graphic art, production and design, and desktop publishing.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Principles of graphic design, including the use of visual elements such as photographs, charts, diagrams, drawings, logos and symbols.
  • Methods for designing and creating exhibits and signs, including building, installing, mounting and framing techniques.
  • Photography techniques.
  • General techniques for carrying out minor repairs on equipment used to construct exhibits/displays.
  • Knowledge of customer service techniques and protocols
  • Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation.
  • General knowledge of Ottawa Public Library policies and procedures related to health and safety.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Minimum keyboard skills of 25 wpm.
  • Data-entry, retrieval and keyboarding skills including use of standard office equipment, including operating an IBM compatible computer in Microsoft Windows.
  • Demonstrated ability to transfer conceptual and visual images into publicity materials, including advertisements, bookplates, banners and other promotional materials.
  • To work with a range of exhibitors and to provide assistance in developing and displaying exhibits and artwork.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools to construct exhibits and to carry out minor repairs and adjustments.
  • To act as the Library photographer.
  • Use tact, discretion and confidentiality.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Perform multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Customer service orientation, including the use of tact, discretion and confidentiality
