REQUIREMENTS TO BE A GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR:

  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Required Certifications: current state approved First Aid and CPR/AED, current, National Certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in-group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise Certification.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience teaching group fitness classes preferred.
  • Current “specialty class” certifications as required: such as MOSSA, Silver Sneakers, Zumba, Mat Pilates, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach group exercise in a proficient manner. Ability to instruct and observe participants using proper exercise techniques.

Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR:

  • Lead high quality group fitness classes, as directed by the program manager, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Create a welcoming and engaging group fitness experience with a focus on safety, quality, and member engagement.
  • Teach effective, safe, and enjoyable exercise classes using proper explanations on exercise form, progressions, cueing techniques and incorporation of music (if applicable).
  • Demonstrate the Y’s core values and attributes in all interactions with staff, members, and guests.
  • Track class attendance using the Y’s designated processes and systems.
