Description:

One Floral Group is a wholesale flower producer that provides tailored floral solutions to retail customers throughout North America and is one of the fastest growing producers of floral products. Our business has over four million square feet of growing and production space in more than six facilities in three different climate zones. We have the ability to grow and build a variety of products, including potted plants and planters, outdoor lawn and garden plants, and vegetable propagation in the best conditions.
Reporting to the Head Grower, this position will be responsible for all aspects of the growing of quality crops. The Grower will lead a growing team to efficiently manage all growing conditions and quality control of product according to product specs and customer standards. This position is responsible for organizing and assigning daily tasks by priority, ensuring efficiency and timely completion. This position must have constant communication with Planning and Production Departments to ensure execution of Production plan. Continuous and proactive communication is vital to the success of the company.

Core competencies required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture or similar
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as Grower with supervisory experience of Growing personnel
  • Must have plant propagation experience (vegetable or flower production)
  • Must have flowering/blooming crops growing experience
  • Experience with PRIVA or Hoogendoorn an asset
  • Willing to relocate to Leamington, Ontario. Canada
  • Proficient computer skills, especially Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent communication and follow through skills
  • Detail oriented and extremely organized
  • Proven analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, showing initiative and good judgement
  • Ability to work extended hours during peak seasons
  • Ability to adapt in a quick and positive manner
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks and requests

Responsibilities:

  • Review crop schedules and provide mapping for crops for planning process.
  • Responsible for the growing of plugs, liners, vegetable plant propagation, potted plants, field-crops ensuring to meet specs and standards.
  • Determine and implement IPM System / practices to prevent and control insects and diseases on crops.
  • Document, Implement and Maintain growing “best practices”, determined by the Head Grower; alert the team of any changes. Ensure that “best practices” are always followed.
  • Manage all growth regulators and pesticide applications.
  • Setting up areas for new plantings and continually monitoring the environment: Lights, mist, curtains, fans, floor heat, Greenhouse temperatures and all environmental conditions (PRIVA/Hoogendoorn)
  • Control irrigation systems, flood, drips, sprinklers and hand water as needed to maintain ideal moisture on crops. Hands on as needed / required.
  • Inspection of all live plants, when importing or exporting or within the facilities.
  • Direct and supervise Assistant Growers and Crop Techs on daily activities and assignments.
  • Provide a weekly/monthly activity report to Head Grower outlining activities, key challenges
  • Recognize unsafe conditions and practices, and make corrections to prevent injuries and property loss
  • Responsible for overseeing all miscellaneous task such as; calibration, sanitizations, cleaning and disinfecting of underground tanks, etc.
  • Monitor daily activities to analyze, evaluate and determine opportunities for improvement in productivity, efficiency and quality. Always look for improvements.
  • Requesting growing supplies: Fertilizers, pesticides. Reporting all purchases to the Head Grower.
  • Maintain records of all aspects of the crop, shrink reports, weekly reports.
  • Document and update Growing Protocols to be approved by Head Grower.
  • Effective team building, provide guidance/support to junior staff members
  • Ensure that all employee questions, suggestions and concerns are addressed in a timely manner
  • Encourage and support an open communication policy with all employees to establish and meet common objectives
  • Openly and honestly communicate with all employees to build trust and effective teamwork as well as encourage employee involvement to achieve shared organizational objectives.
  • On call 24-7 to respond to alarms or greenhouse related emergencies to be shared with other Growers.
  • Other duties as required.
