Description:
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Environmental Compliance and under the general direction of the Director of Environmental Compliance, the Hazardous Waste Technician is responsible for the storage, inspection, handling, disposal and segregation of all out of date chemicals, hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste, industrial waste, bio-hazardous waste and process waste waters resulting from repair and maintenance operations according to PHI Safety Manual section 10, sections 40 and 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations, and Title 33 of the Louisiana Administrative Code. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Assistant Director of Environmental Compliance or the Director of Environmental Compliance.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma
Possess and maintain a commercial driver’s license with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements.
Possess or obtain a DOT Medical certificate.
Possess or obtain forklift operator certification
Successfully pass a 40-hour Hazwoper Course
Successfully pass annual Hazwoper refresher training
Possess or obtain Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals wastewater treatment (Class II) certification with a requirement to upgrade to (Class III) within five years.
Possess or obtain LDEQ Visible Emission Evaluation Course Certification every six months or until opacity monitoring is no longer a condition of permit compliance.
Possess or obtain respirator qualification.
Possess or obtain any other certification approved by the Director of Environmental Compliance as being appropriate for enhancing the ability of the company to comply with State, Federal or Local Environmental Regulations.
Must be able to work with minimum supervision, possess good communication, verbal, organizational and writing skills.
Responsibilities:
Conduct and record daily inspections of hazardous waste storage areas at Plant I, Plant II, Facility Maintenance, Fixed Wing Hangar and the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Disseminate, coordinate, schedule and facilitate policies and procedures pertinent to the collection, preparation, shipment and disposal of hazardous waste throughout the company through collaboration with field personnel.
Operate and maintain the wastewater treatment plant including interaction with City of Lafayette Utility System representatives
Train shop personnel on policy and procedures through participation in shop safety meetings as a guest speaker.
Investigate and report on all waste collection, treatment plant operational malfunctions, hazardous materials shipping incidents, and chemical and fuel spill incidents to the Director of Environmental Compliance.
Perform Spill Response and cleanup activities
