JOB SUMMARY

Works as part of a team to provide resident-centered care to the residents of the Long-Term Care home.
Under the supervision of registered nursing staff, assists with the care of residents in the long-term care homes in accordance with the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of Senior Services. Report observations and all signs and symptoms of change in a resident (emotional, physical and cognitive) to registered staff. Perform and collaborates as a member of the interdisciplinary team in accordance with the Long-Term Care Homes Act and the Roles and Responsibilities document.

EDUCATION

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Certificate from an approved Personal Support Worker (PSW) Course, or, a minimum of 1 year of successful completion of a recognized Registered Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse program if currently enrolled, or, equivalent education as permitted by the applicable legislation/Act.
  • Training in Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA) preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 1 month of current (within the last 3 years) experience in a long-term care setting.
  • Knowledge of resident/client safety issues and demonstrated capacity to apply resident/client safety practices.

SKILLS

  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to provide resident-centered care with integrity, dedication, compassion, and respect
  • Strong listening, communication, teamwork, and relationship-building skills
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing learning, development, and training (formal and informal)
  • Documentation skills and attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills in order to complete documentation (Point of Care preferred), email, online training, online scheduling, etc.
  • Ability to follow established routines and also easily adapt to changes in workflow and resident need
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the job

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • In accordance with the Corporate Policy and applicable Legislation/Regulation(s), the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Police Record Check and submit a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, as well as complete any subsequent declaration or check as required by legislation/Act, regulation, and/or policy
  • Compliance with any requirements, including immunization and screening measures, of the infection prevention and control program as required by applicable legislation/Act, regulation or policy; some measures are only recommendations (not requirements)
  • Staff are required to be screened for Tuberculosis in accordance with the applicable legislation/Act
  • Must have a good attendance record
  • Must be able and available to work shift work, weekends, and statutory holidays (24 x7 x 365 operation) and meet requirements of availability as per the Collective Agreement.
