Position Summary:
Under the day-to-day supervision of the Manager of Varsity Sports, the Martlets Volleyball Head Coach will report to the Director Sports Programs. The Head Coach is responsible for overseeing the McGill’s women’s volleyball program, including the coaching, management, and team coordination. The incumbent will operate under U SPORTS and RSEQ bylaws, university policies, and the philosophy and objectives of the Varsity program and athletic department. The mandate includes varsity student-athlete recruitment, mentoring, and academic athletic progression. The objective is to create an environment that fully develops the potential of all student-athletes involved in the program. Primary Responsibilities:
- Manage a team of professional assistant coaches.
- Develop and manage effective recruitment and retention strategies. Identify and recruit prospective student-athletes who meet McGill’s academic standards and would be an asset to the University and the team.
- Provide senior professional coaching services to varsity student-athletes on the Martlets team.
- Coach and develop varsity student-athletes to enhance their skills, tactical knowledge, and technical abilities.
- Design yearly training plans and programs. Set objectives to ensure that varsity student-athletes train and perform to a high standard.
- Oversee the implementation of short and long-term goals and objectives related to the continuous development of the program.
- Provide expertise in the development and implementation of policies, programs and systems that support the program and unit’s initiatives.
- Collaborate with varsity administration on the implementation of a renewed and sustainable financial model for the program.
- Actively engage and build partnerships with sport associations, leagues, Quebec RSEQ CEGEPs, and out-of-province high schools, both nationally and internationally.
- Collaborate with professionals in the areas of wellness, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy and medical.
- In collaboration with the Women in Sport (WIS) program Manager, assist in providing additional services such as mental performance, sports psychology, nutrition and sports science. Be an active partner in Women in Sport initiatives.
- Collaborate with University Advancement on implementing fundraising activities and athletic financial award programs, attend alumni events.
- Represent the team, program and institution at RSEQ and U SPORTS meetings.
- Act as the team spokesperson and participate in press conferences, and media interviews when necessary.
- Make recommendations on financial and human resources needs.
- Manage the program budget, including equipment purchases, travel expenditures & bookings, recruitment, and special events.
- Comply with all University, RSEQ and U SPORTS rules and regulations.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
- Undergraduate Degree
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as Head Coach or high level of competition lead assistant coach in a U SPORTS, university, national or professional setting.
- NCCP Performance Coach Certification (completed or in progress)
- An in-depth understanding of volleyball techniques, strategies, and rules is essential.
- Experience in varsity student- athlete recruitment, leadership skills and ability to be a positive role model for varsity student-athletes.
- Experience and critical thinking capabilities in dealing with varsity student -athletes within high performance sport.
- Possess a clear and genuine communication style, which includes listening intently, to connect with the varsity student-athletes and build their trust with the end goal of maximizing potential.
- Excellence in inspiring and motivating the team, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. Create a positive and encouraging environment that fosters individual engagement and a desire to improve.
- A high emotional intelligence in managing both the coach and varsity student-athletes to maintain a positive team dynamic.
- Experience with varsity student-athlete eligibility, RSEQ, and U Sports policies and procedures.
- Experience using MS office suite and Volleyball related software.
- Demonstrated experience in planning and organizing practices, matches, and other team activities efficiently. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of French and English. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties require French and English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4
