KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9,10 or 11 (Ordinary/Honours Degree, Post Graduate Qualification), or equivalent, including being professionally qualified in relevant scientific or business discipline, with a broad range of professional leadership experience in business development.
A2 An established track record in a biotech/pharmaceutical environment.
A3 Knowledge and experience of working and collaborating with biopharmaceutical companies and understanding of their business drivers.
A4 An extensive external network able to support the needs and ambitions of PMS-IC and its partner organizations.
A5 Experiential knowledge of the Scottish Life Sciences community, including SMEs, SDI, Scottish Enterprise, SLA and the academic sector, and the key figures within it.
A6 Experience of establishing, developing and maintaining relevant marketing intelligence and knowledge systems and utilising them effectively in business development and customer support.

Responsibilities:

JOB PURPOSE

To drive the attraction of new/expanded business to PMS-IC, focusing key strategic opportunity areas such as: companies in the Scottish precision medicine ecosystem and external biotech, life science and pharmaceutical companies, increasing the number of collaborations with PMS-IC. This includes the establishment of strategic alliances between PMS-IC and third parties, working with the SME’s and larger companies in this sector to deliver both patient benefits and economic growth. Our objectives for Phase 2 of PMS-IC are:- To support the effective implementation of precision medicine into the NHS To support the growth of the Scottish Life Sciences sector To deliver a pipeline of sustainable exemplar project, funded by industry or grants.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Lead the development of a business development strategy and multi-year delivery plan for PMS-IC, for approval by the PMS-IC Board, and provide regular progress reporting and expert market advice.
  2. Deliver a pipeline of funded work for PMS-IC by developing and securing a mature pipeline of strategically relevant contracts/collaborations with SMEs, academia and industry
  3. Work closely with the CEO to ensure that projects are appropriately planned, resourced and costed.
  4. Liaise with CEO to model PMS-IC capacity and plan for potential work activity.
  5. Formulating, leading/overseeing as required, diverse project teams to drive forward business attraction/bid initiatives.
  6. Develop effective working relationships with researchers and clinicians within PMS-IC’s partner universities and associated Health Boards, identifying key opportunity areas and engaging, influencing and supporting stakeholders to establish appropriate collaborations and support/lead bids for new work.
  7. Establish productive and effective working relationship with PMS-IC’s industrial partners to identify projects of mutual benefit for all partners, and drive and support the conclusion of such contracts.
  8. Build relationships in the precision medicine ecosystem with providers of emerging and disruptive technologies that may be of interest to PMS-IC and make associated recommendations to senior management and stakeholders on PMS-IC strategy.
  9. Establish strong working relationships with business development personnel and key decision makers in the global pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.
  10. Identify, initiate, and drive to completion, complex business deals between the biopharmaceutical industry and PMS-IC and its University, NHS and Industrial partners.
  11. Develop and utilise knowledge of relevant partner/sector organisations and gain traction as to how PMS-IC can assist, on a fee for service basis, in the delivery of the client’s objectives.
  12. To act as the main point of contact for all potential business customers wishing to contact PMS-IC
  13. Engage, motivate and mentor colleagues at all levels to develop commercial awareness and market engagement.
  14. Effective management of the project/alliance managers in order to manage and grow ongoing relationships with those companies that have entered into collaborative agreements with PMS-IC.
  15. Input to the CEO in defining/formulating the overall business strategy and targets for PMS-IC and design and implement appropriate frameworks to manage, monitor and report on progress and KPIs.
  16. Initiates and lead the sales process through to conclusion, through building relationships, qualifying leads, and understanding the competitive landscape.
  17. Attend partnering meetings and present at external conferences to raise the profile of PMS-IC among potential partners.
  18. Other duties as required.
