JOB SUMMARY

The Department for Business and Trade supports businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country. Strategy and Private Office sits within its centre, delivering high-profile projects for Ministers and senior leaders to support the Department’s objectives and contribute to the success of the UK’s economic goals.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead finance and business management for the Strategy and Private Office Directorate. As part of the Strategy Director’s Office, you will work closely with DBT Finance to lead on the management of the directorate’s budget and headcount, providing advice to the Director and Senior Management Team that allows us to remain agile and meet our targets during a time of continuous change.
You’ll join a supportive team who will give you the right tools and training to succeed and help you to develop your career further. As part of your role, you will have the option to complete a Business Administrator or Accountancy apprenticeship programme.

JOB DESCRIPTION

You will be responsible for ensuring that our Senior Management Team have accurate information to support them to make decisions on their finance and business plan. You will act as a key point of contact for staff in the directorate on finance matters, working with stakeholders across the department to deliver a high-quality business management service to the directorate.

You will lead the management of a c. £16 million budget, including:

  • Supporting responsible budget management across the directorate on behalf of the Director by working with DBT Finance to provide best practice advice to the Senior Management Team
  • Proactively spotting financial opportunities and risks
  • Leading the management of any funding or pressure held centrally within the Director’s Office
  • Leading on the coordination of directorate responses to any commissions from DBT Finance
  • Leading the annual Business Planning process to determine how we use our budget in future financial years

You will have direct responsibility for leading business management for 5 Deputy Directors, including:

  • Leading the monthly forecasting and reconciliation process for their budgets
  • Providing them with strategic advice on their financial position
  • Supporting their teams with procurement
  • Supporting their teams with management of In-Year Award budgets

You will manage the directorate’s headcount on behalf of the Director, including:

  • Monitoring the directorate’s FTE, including recruitment request approvals in line with the directorate’s business plan
  • Leading on the directorate’s monthly People Data return
