Description:
The Central Animal Facility (CAF) is the largest facility of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC), University of Bern (Switzerland).
The main function is to breed and house small rodents and rabbits and to provide the infrastructure for conducting animal experiments as part of the biomedical research program of the University of Bern. The 3Rs (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the “Culture of Care” and compliance with guidelines and regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy.
100% position, 2 years contract (renewable)
Tasks
- Direct the operation of the Central Animal Facility (processes, finances and personnel)
- Provide veterinary clinical, surgical and medical care to the animal population
- Supervise the hygiene and monitoring program
- Manage the animal stock with the database system
- Plan and participate to the emergency, weekend, and holiday care
- Write, update and implement SOPs
- Advice the researchers regarding genetically modified mouse breeding and research procedures
- Ensure the compliance with the regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, University’s directives and process specifications
- Participate to building renovation projects
- Support the ECLAM residency program and internal education
Requirements
- You have a doctorate in veterinary medicine and a specialisation in laboratory animal medicine (ECLAM/ACLAM diploma or board eligibility).
- You have practical experience in breeding of genetically modified models. Experience with fish or zebrafish is a plus.
- You bring proven management experience and leadership in complex structures.
- You are team- and goal-oriented and have excellent communication skills.
- You speak English. German would be an advantage.
