As the use of digital assets and currencies (DAC), tokenisation and distributed ledger technology (DLT) continues to grow, this role is accountable for the implementation DAC technology solutions and services within Markets and Securities Services (HSBC’s Investment Bank - MSS). The incumbent is expected to stay current with industry developments, represent MSS IT in discussions with senior stakeholders, the wider industry and create and drive a DAC technology strategy. They will be a trusted advisor to the business.
The jobholder must be focused, determined and be able to engender the support of senior executives across MSS (whom may have their own conflicting local pressures.) Against this background, the jobholder must be able to drive through solutions to a successful conclusion and to ensure that matters are properly managed. You will work with demanding and challenging stakeholders, often against tight timelines and must demonstrate strong judgment capabilities without being authoritarian.
This role leads the MSS’ Strategy and Digital Assets technology function and the jobholder is required to work in an environment of significant ambiguity, acting with autonomy, dealing with major issues for which there is no clear solution and providing judgement and clear direction.

Job Requirements:

  • Be accountable for the delivery of MSS DAC technology solutions and services.
  • Lead the MSS IT DAC team. Ensuring MSS has human and financial capacity to deliver the services its business need, flexing the team accordingly.
  • Oversee, and be accountable for, the design, build, implementation of digital assets platforms, services and solutions (including operating models) ensuring projects are delivered on-time and to budget.
  • Work with the MSS business to complete and deliver professional proposals and presentations to clients, regulators, interested parties on digital assets and currencies.
  • Manage multiple demanding stakeholders often with competing requirements. Be the Businesses trust adviser on digital assets technology and project implementation.
  • Be in regular contact with technology providers, FinTechs, other banks using building DAC services to ensure MSS stays “close to the market”.
  • Champion MSS’s push into different facets of digital assets technology, both externally and internally (speaking at events, blogs, white papers etc.) – demonstrating our innovation and thought leadership in this space.
  • Organise experiments and PoCs to road-test the latest technology.
  • Support the wider MSS Technology leadership team (LT) with guidance on digital assets and associated architecture.
  • Advise the MSS product and operations teams on all aspects of digital assets.
  • Be prepared to challenge the status-quo and the statement “that’s the way we’ve always done it!”
  • Establish themselves as part of the SSv IT LT becoming a trusted adviser to these senior management teams by providing accurate unbiased and timely models that are aligned with both MSS’ technology architecture and the strategy of MSS. Similarly, the role holder needs to become a trusted adviser to both Operations and key Product staff.

Requirements

Required Qualification/Skills:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills – is someone that people want to work for.
  • Successful track record as a partner and adviser who inspires credibility with senior management.
  • Is a good communicator and orator. Strong interpersonal skills - able to communicate effectively and with confidence across MSS, the industry and the delivery teams.
  • Knowledge and comprehensive understanding of digital assets and their underlying infrastructure (e.g., the pros and cons of different types of DLT) and associated risks.
  • Understanding of the business drivers and dynamics within MSS, including articulating the pressures and trends effecting the industry and its clients which are driving the use of digital assets.
  • Proven ability to navigate the matrix and partner with colleagues at all levels to drive business growth and customer focused outcomes.
  • Strong analytical skills - able to critically consider information from several sources, identify material issues, and articulate and present a well-reasoned business case within defined and challenging timeframes.
  • A practical ‘hands-on’ approach suited to working as part of small team.
  • In addition to digital assets technology (including DLT) has a working appreciation of the latest technology and what it can achieve.
  • Ability to work with limited resources to achieve an outcome.
  • Is comfortable dealing with ambiguity.
