HEAD OF RESIDENT DOCTORS

At HCA UK, we have an exciting opportunity suitable to Senior SPR level Doctors, or Junior Consultants, an alternative strategic managerial position, to be a Head of Resident Doctors

  • Full Time: 40 Hours Per Week, Monday - Friday, 80% managerial time, 20% Clinical Time.
  • Salary: (DOE).
  • Private medical healthcare insurance, contributory private pension, 25 days annual leave, plus bank holidays and 5 days paid study leave per annum.
  • Plus; Fully Funded Masters Degree in Medical Leadership at City University in association with Bayes Business School.
  • Location: HCA Healthcare UK Corporate Head office and The Harborne Hospital, Birmingham. There is also some opportunity to work from home remotely.

Summary of the Head of Resident Doctor position:
It is increasingly the consensus amongst the medical community that clinicians lead the best healthcare organisations. Their combination of clinical leadership and management skills are critical in providing safe, effective and high-quality care to patients.

As a trained doctor, you will be best placed to be responsible for direct line management of Resident Doctors and accountable for the services they provide at the Harborne Hospital.
This position is part of an established team of 5 other Heads of Resident Doctors responsible for different HCA sites, reporting Centrally into Corporate Head office, and working in partnership with onsite Senior Management Teams.

Responsibilities:

  • This is a role aligned to the Harborne Hospital, their go-to Resident Doctor site lead, to ensure consistent, high-quality care is delivered, attending to business needs, in line with Consultant led private patient activity levels.
  • You will work in partnership with our hospital’s leadership teams, Chief Medical Officer, Lead Consultants, Chief Nursing Officer and CEO, and those who work closely with Resident Doctors onsite.
  • The role is to be accountable for people managing Resident Doctors, operationally and commercially responsible for a range of different service provisions, including General Surgery and Acute Medicine and you will also have oversight of Critical Care.
  • As a people manager, you will provide direct line management to circa 20-25 Resident Doctors, from a range of diverse background and specialist areas of training, you are responsible for managing performance, attendance, conduct, training, cost, wellbeing and their development, to ensure continuous, safe and effective service, supporting each department.
  • You will lead on recruiting new Resident Doctors for permanent and temporary vacancies. This includes proving your new employees with a robust orientation and supervision programme. Utilising your Clinical and leadership skills to provide mentorship, support and development and HCA ways of working training.
  • Work in partnership with our sites HR and Finance departments, you will oversee employment contract agreements, study agreements, and managing budgets resourcefully, this includes any workforce-related costs; salaries, education, or temporary workforce usage and spend.
  • You will oversee rota management, ensuring staffing levels are responsive to changes in patient census and patient needs. Flexing bank and agency use, dependent upon patient ratios and activity, to maximise cost management.
  • You will consistently strive for excellence at all times, providing guidance and support on potential new ways of working, improving efficiencies, Quality Improvement Projects or Increasing Patient Satisfaction opportunities, including leading audits, projects or research.
  • You will also be encouraged to work part clinical too, among your colleagues on ad-hoc shifts to maintain your clinical skills, and this will be to the level of a Resident Doctor (SPR)
