Job Description
The Role
The Health & Safety Manager, reports to the site director and is both accountable and responsible for oversight and management of the health and safety for the Kemerton site.
The Health and Safety Manager will ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements for each respective area. Work to establish and maintain a safety culture that drives our goal of zero incidents; they will manage all aspects associated with HS programs/management systems for the site and supervise department activities to support overall company objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a Health and Safety Management System in the workplace, in accordance with established regulatory requirements, as well as Albemarle policies and guidelines
  • Provide oversight and direction to ensure operational activities are compliant with regulations, guidelines, procedures and industry standards. This requires inspections, evaluations, risk assessments and the development of procedures to ensure the hazards associated with these activities are controlled
  • Solid understanding and ability to drive behavior based safety that supports a 24/7 safety culture at all levels while fostering an employee-driven safety ownership program and culture
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort interacting with a variety of employees at all levels of the organisation
  • Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law; establish internal plant wide policies, and review and update as necessary to ensure compliance
  • Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and incident prevention
  • Monitor current and future legal and other requirements applicable within operations and planned operational changes or new equipment/processes. Ensure potential impacts and controls are communicated to operational management
  • Provide support to ensure incident investigations are effective to discover root causes and ensure appropriate actions are identified, implemented and monitored
  • Define, drive and report on health and safety goals, actions, awareness, issues and statistics
  • Partner with organisational leadership and corporate health and safety to establish health and safety strategic plan and priorities and to develop, implement, and continuously improve health and safety programs and performance.
  • Represent the Company working closely with regulatory agencies, community groups and other interested parties related to health and safety matters.
  • Supervise department activities through effective planning, staff training, time management, scheduling and reviews.
  • Work with the Kemerton Site Leadership team to ensure that the level of service provided to the Kemerton site meets all the needs.

Work Experience Requirements

  • Ten + years’ experience managing safety and health within a chemical manufacturing environment
  • Practical, hands-on experience developing and implementing program elements, compliance initiatives, risk assessment, industrial hygiene, root cause analysis, and employee engagement
  • Deep understanding of legal health and safety regulations
  • Ability in producing reports and developing relevant policies
  • Good knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment
  • Excellent organisational, leadership, supervisory and motivational skills
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and written; experience working with people in varying organisational levels

Education / Qualification Requirements

  • Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering or related field as an equivalent
  • Post graduate studies in leadership and or change management
