The role:
Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive range of employee health and safety programs and services to meet the physical and psychological safety goals and legal obligations of Elmira Pet Products. This role focuses on injury and illness prevention through training, safe work practices, claims and disability management, and occupational health initiatives.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop, promote and continually improve work practices, policies and procedures for physical and psychological health and safety.
  • Implement and maintain safety processes as required by regulations for industrial establishments.
  • Recommend and oversee the implementation of safety program related projects.
  • Work closely with the maintenance department, supervisors, managers and the JHSC to ensure all aspects of safety program compliance.
  • Maintain statistics and forward reports on a monthly basis to required personnel.
  • Prepare and conduct regular JHSC, and Manager/Supervisor Safety meetings. Conduct other safety related focus teams meetings as needed. (ie., ergonomics)
  • Review and assist in all incident investigations.
  • Update, maintain and present safety orientation for all new employees to ensure complete and effective understanding of potential risks and expected behaviors within the workplace.
  • Coordinate and oversee all aspects of safety training, including documentation, record retention and knowledge assessment.
  • Develop, implement and train all employees in safety procedures, standards and programs.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly safety talks. Coordinate any additional training and testing (First Aid, Fork Truck and Confined Space) for all personnel following the Annual Training Schedule.
  • Manage all WSIB claims and Remain at Work/ Return to Work programs for injured/ill employees.
  • Manage the safety boots, safety glasses and molded hearing protection programs.
  • Participate as an active member of the HR department.
  • Work closely with the HR Generalist to maintain compliance to Employment Standards.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

What you’ll have:

  • Post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field
  • Certified Registered Safety Professional designation (CRSP) preferred
  • Five or more years of experience in a Health & Safety role in a similar environment
  • Experience conducting in-person training
  • Experience managing WSIB claims including remain-at-work and return-to-work processes
  • Advanced knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and WSIB requirements
  • Experience and knowledge in industrial hygiene, human anatomy and physiology, workplace hazards and auditing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work alone and in group situations
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills
