MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
Current First Aid/CPR card are able to obtain one within 30 days of hire
Current CNA credential or in process or willing to get CNA credential with 1 year
Previous experience working as a School Nurse or Health Assistant in an educational setting or in the healthcare field

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working in a tribal school
Knowledge of traditional Native American cultures and values
Possession of a current, valid Certified Nurse Assistant credential from the state of Washington

Responsibilities:

  • Administer first aid to ill and injured students according to the WA State Department of Health “sickness and injuries at school” guidelines and/or the American Heart Association First Aid Guidelines.
  • Dispense student’s medication according to the Nurse Practice Act under the direction of the School Nurse. The School Nurse must be called prior to the administration of the initial dose of all medication.
  • Maintain the health room log documenting all health room activity. Maintain other health room documentation including, but not limited to, health folders, immunization records, medication log, screening results, and accident reports.
  • Assist with health screening which will include helping to prepare and organize the screening day.
  • Record student self-referrals, parent and teacher referrals for the School Nurse.
  • Check for head lice and follow school/state procedures.
  • Will be required to determine appropriate notification of the School Nurse, parent/guardian, 911 or return to the classroom based on what is appropriate for a student
  • Consult School Nurse for any serious illness or injury, including all injuries to teeth and head, severe lacerations, seizures, rashes, bee/insect stings, suspected fractures, asthma attacks or other breathing problems.
  • Contact School Nurse when a parent/guardian cannot be contacted, upon request by an administrator and upon request of a teacher.
  • Direct students appropriately within the school building as needed. this may include being taken to the assigned school nurse, a counselor, the attendance office and/or the principal.
  • As appropriate under the state guidelines, perform other medical duties as assigned by the School Nurse and follow building policy and procedures as directed by the principal.
  • Maintains effective communication with classroom teachers and administrators
  • Maintain professional conduct when working with students, staff and parents
  • Maintains regular attendance and punctuality
  • Performs other duties as assigne
