Job Title: Health & Safety / Leave of Absence (LOA) Specialist
Company: triOS College & Eastern College
Location: This is a hybrid role, with approximately 60% of the time working from the Campus Support Centre in Mississauga or a home office, and approximately 40% of the time working at different campuses and administrative offices.
Hours: Full-Time, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

Responsibilities:

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The primary purpose of this role is to ensure a safe work and learning environment for all staff and students and ensure clear and concise communications while delivering exceptional internal client service.
You will provide advice and guidance on Health and Safety matters across the organization; study accident trends from near miss information and target areas for improvement; deliver Health and Safety training, and work with the Operations and Facilities teams on specific projects. You will also be responsible for all Leaves of Absences in the provinces in which we do business, including occupational and non-occupational absences (worker’s compensation and medical).

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

Health & Safety:

  • Support, develop and implement health and safety plans and procedures in the workplace according to legal guidelines, and taking into consideration, the best practices for a post-secondary education environment, to promote awareness, reduce hazards and prevent injuries and loss.
  • Monitor changes to H&S regulations, and trends in post-secondary education, assess these changes for business impact, and communicate necessary procedural changes to internal stakeholders.
  • Evaluate practices, procedures, and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law. Recommend effective solutions for compliance.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents to find cause and take prevention measures for further incidents.
  • Support facility Joint Health & Safety Committees, including reviewing all monthly meeting minutes and follow-up on any safety concerns and action items.
  • Take part in monthly facility inspections, review the inspection reports, and ensure that any identified safety concerns are resolved.
  • Review, assess, and resolve any health and safety concerns raised by employees and students.
  • Ensure that annual fire safety inspections are conducted at all locations.

Leave Management:

  • Manage worker’s compensation claims across Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
  • Oversee leaves of absences, including tracking all claims, issuing LOA letters as needed, tracking expected return to work, and managing our long-term disability program.
  • Coordinate and manage a stay at work, and progressive return to work programs in collaboration with our benefits provider, WSIB, WCB and WorkSafe NB and company policies, and assess employee’s progress.
  • Provide case summaries and written documentation throughout the life of a claim as required, including protests and appeals when needed.
  • Support and assist operational departments on the appropriate usage of leave entitlements.
