You will join our Rare and Inherited Disease team who are committed to patient-centered service provision through accurate and timely data analysis, interpretation, and reporting of genomic test results. Rare and Inherited Disease covers a wide range of different tests and technologies. Attention to detail is essential to ensure that patient results are delivered in a safe and effective way.

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (WGLS) in Salisbury to join our dynamic genomics team. We are looking to appoint an ambitious individual to a permanent full-time Healthcare Science Practitioner scientific support role.
The WGLS is an integrated genomics testing service formed from the amalgamation of Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory, now WGLS (Salisbury), and Molecular Pathology which is based at University Hospital Southampton (UHS). The WGLS is part of the Central & South Genomic Laboratory Hub.

Employment will be with UHS but the roles will be based at WGLS (Salisbury) within Salisbury District Hospital. There are future plans to re-locate to a joint facility with WGLS (Southampton) in the Southampton area once a suitable site has been identified (with a minimum 1 year notice prior to relocation).

  • You will be responsible for sample triaging and investigation review, including for whole genome sequencing referrals
  • You will work as part of the sending team to organise the selection of appropriate tests and export of samples when tests are undertaken in other centres
  • You will liaise with other healthcare professionals to develop and maximise the effectiveness of the service.
  • You will be involved in data analysis and preparing test worklists
  • You will write simple genetic reports
  • You will contribute to service development and staff training and education within the section.
  • To supervise/ undertake the processing of pathological specimens for screening, diagnostic and monitoring purposes.
  • To provide accurate, timely and appropriate analytical data
  • To deliver a high-quality service that meets the needs of the patients and service users.
  • To manage training and education of all grades of staff within the section.
  • To liaise with other healthcare professionals to develop and maximise the effectiveness of the service.
