JOB SUMMARY AND QUALIFICATIONS
The Histology Technician is responsible for preparing tissue specimens to be examined by the pathologist. This preparation includes specimen collection, gross exam assistance, routine processing, decalcification, tissue embedding, microtomy, routine and special staining, mounting procedures, frozen sections, operating and maintaining instruments in the department, reagent preparation, and clerical duties. - You will accurately perform low/moderate complexity laboratory tests specific to the area of the assignment
- You will perform quality control and preventative maintenance as described in the histology competency plan
- You will ensure specimen integrity throughout the testing process
- You will ensure laboratory instrumentation functions appropriately and notify appropriate individuals when repairs are needed
QUALIFICATIONS
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with at least 32 semester hours in science, of which 12 hours are in chemistry and 16 hours are in the areas of general biology, histology, zoology, anatomy and physiology, and 1 year of experience in a histopathology laboratory under the supervision of a pathologist certified by the American Board of Pathology and Anatomic Pathology or a pathologist eligible to be certified in anatomic pathology. OR
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, including the semester hours required above, and successfully completing a histology program certified by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation. OR
- Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a histo-technologist with 8 years of full-time experience before August 1980 in an approved histopathology laboratory
- Certified by the State of Nevada as a Histotechnologist
- Work experience in a large clinical laboratory is preferred; we will consider new graduate of an accredited college or university who has passed the ASCP examination for histotechnology
