QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated Health & Safety management experience across chemicals or engineering.
  • Background in chemical, engineering, and/or R&D (desirable).
  • NEBOSH Diploma (advantageous)
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and internally auditing safety management systems based on legislation and ISO 45001, 14001 (desirable).
  • Development, management, and audit of health and safety management systems (minimum HSG65).
  • Passion for health, safety, and well-being, with the ability to drive initiatives independently.
  • Knowledge of Explosive Regulations 2014 (desirable).
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong influencing and persuading skills.

Responsibilities:

ROLE OVERVIEW

This pivotal dual-site role encompasses environmental, health, and safety management for our exciting renewable energy start-up client. The focus is to provide health and safety to the company and work with the operations teams to enhance current systems and drive improvements. The HSE Manager will be accountable for all measurement, management, and implementation of our Health, Safety, and Environmental Policies.
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish and maintain robust health, safety, and environment management systems, including ISO14001, ISO45001, and ISO9001.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK legislation, including site construction regulations, waste management, and COSHH.
  • Develop effective policies, procedures, and training packages to ensure compliance and promote a strong health and safety culture.
  • Review and conduct risk assessments, design strategies to minimise hazards, and generate SSOW based on findings.
  • Record and manage all accidents, incidents, and near misses, including root cause analysis and corrective action plans.
  • Ensure compliance with work equipment regulations (PUWER, LOLER) by maintaining a register and ensuring statutory maintenance.
  • Engage across sites to implement health and safety policies, ensuring compliance with legislation, and liaise with employees, subcontractors, and suppliers on H&S matters.
  • Coach and support R&D and engineering teams to generate new solutions to H&S issues.
  • Work closely with the COO to ensure the successful implementation of the H&S strategy.
  • Support the COO with any occupational health issues.
  • Communicate positive H&S performance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Host monthly H&S meetings, conduct training, toolbox talks, inductions, and investigate incidents as required.
  • Undertake audits and inspections, identify areas for improvement, and report findings.
  • Develop training and competency matrices for all staff.
  • Engage employees in safety initiatives and promote workplace well-being.
  • Perform any other H&S duties and responsibilities as required to maintain and improve company safety.
