Job Description
AECOM is seeking a skilled Human Osteologist to join our multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will play a key role in archaeological projects involving human skeletal remains. You will work with cultural resource management (CRM) professionals, archaeologists, and project managers to identify, analyze, and report on human osteological findings across various development and heritage projects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field with a focus on Human Osteology.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in the analysis of human skeletal remains.
  • Familiarity with bioarchaeological methods and osteological databases.
  • Experience working within CRM projects and understanding of local, provincial, and federal laws regarding human remains.
  • Proficiency in report writing and technical documentation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Physical Anthropology, Archaeology, or Osteoarchaeology.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience with ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis, isotopic studies, or other specialized osteological methods.
  • Field excavation experience with human remains in diverse environments.
  • Ability to use 3D modeling software and other technological tools for analysis and presentation.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze human skeletal remains recovered from archaeological sites.
  • Identify and record osteological characteristics including age, sex, stature, pathology, and trauma.
  • Prepare detailed reports and contribute to CRM deliverables, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and ethical standards.
  • Collaborate with archaeologists, bioarchaeologists, and anthropologists to interpret findings within a broader archaeological and historical context.
  • Participate in field excavations and provide on-site expertise in the identification and recovery of human remains.
  • Ensure proper documentation, handling, and preservation of remains in accordance with industry best practices.
  • Communicate findings effectively to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies.
  • Assist in public outreach and education, when applicable, to communicate the importance of osteological analysis in archaeological research.
