JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Human Resources Associate.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, HR Business Partners, this position is responsible for supporting a variety of HR functions. As a vital member of the HR team, you will play a key role in fostering a positive work environment, ensuring smooth HR processes, and contributing to the overall success of the organization.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Under the direction of Supervisor or delegate, advise Line Management and employees on collective agreement, legislative and business Human Resources policies, processes, and obligations. Work with client and union stakeholders to resolve problems and arrive at mutually agreeable solutions.
- Under the direction of Supervisor or delegate, counsel employees with respect to personnel problems, such as substance abuse, domestic or financial difficulties, referring them to appropriate agencies for further assistance.
- Coordinate, assist and counsel employees associated with a variety of programs and processes, including but not limited to service recognition, goalsharing, performance plans, and specialized requirements. Follow up and run reports for the purpose of action tracking, monthly budget, staff planning, voluntary separation statistics, incentive program/pay changes, grievance data, pension, tenure, sick leave entitlement, etc. Maintain and update databases, manipulating data, checking calculations, and resolving discrepancies to ensure efficiency and completeness of tools and information.
- Provide advice, guidance and services in areas of organizational structure, job evaluation, compensation, benefits and payroll administration, including related policies and procedures. Recommend and attempt to ensure adherence to established policies and practices.
- Working in conjunction with Line Management clients, develop and participate in selection processes, including posting, development of selection criteria, interview format and interview panel. Prepare/defend rationales for selection.
- Assist Supervisor and other work group personnel in the compilation and preparation of grievance/arbitration and employee disciplinary and performance documentation.
- Act as a recorder at joint and management meetings, as assigned. Contribute to the development of settlements, and monitor outcome to ensure that accountable parties have fulfilled requirements.
- Provide support to Supervisor and delegate(s) in terms of responding to and following up on employee/management/stakeholder requests, and other queries. Perform document management activities and provide regular input to workload prioritization. Recommend and implement desktop method/process/tool improvements to facilitate the effectiveness of business function deliverables.
- Work with Line Management clients on the development, implementation and monitoring to discern the effectiveness of Health and Safety programs.
- Develop for approval and carry out work plans and programs/processes in specialized areas identified as key issues, such as, training, labour relations, employment equity, compensation and benefits, health and safety, non-technical training, information systems, etc. Recommend departmental/divisional priorities and the provision of designated services for the plan. Integrate resources with those of customers and other divisions, where applicable, to provide an effective team output. Monitor progress, and report on and/or present results at significant stages or on completion of the plan(s), including appropriate recommendations to Supervisor or others. Provide “subject matter expert” services to customers and counterparts within and external to the Division, as requested.
- Prepare and revise for approval, documentation, i.e., departmental/divisional instructions/reference plans and other recommended practices for employee services activities, with reference to HR policies and procedures, advice sheets, contracts, and agreements. As necessary, advise and assist line management in the preparation of section specific documentation which impacts on employee relations, as assigned by Supervisor and/or requested/ required by customers.
- Carry out studies and/or gather statistics, analyze and prepare reports on any aspect of HR issues or procedures as required, or directed by Supervisor and/or customers. Query computer databases to access and report on trends and emerging issues. Deliver presentations on results, as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS
- University Degree or Post-Secondary Education in Human Resources; CHRL designation is considered an asset
- Experience as an HR Consultant or HR Advisor with sound knowledge of human resources principles. Labour/employee relations experience in a unionized environment will be an asset.
- Results oriented and the ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment while effectively managing and adapting to multiple changing priorities for multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively, possess excellent written and verbal communications skills, and strong facilitation, negotiation, influencing and presentation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, must be a trusted advisor with experience in building, shaping and maintaining positive relationships and partnerships with a wide variety of stakeholders (hiring managers, colleagues, union representatives, etc).
- Ability to quickly understand business process and navigate organization and support systems to deliver results to client groups.
- Experience and solid understanding working with HRIS systems. Experience with SAP and SuccessFactors is an asset;
- Willingness to travel locally between Durham region locations, as required.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
