The BC Nurses’ Union (BCNU) is a strong, dynamic voice for nurses and nursing in British Columbia, representing more than 48,000 members. BCNU provides collective agreement negotiation and support to its members, as well as professional and advocacy services in the field of research, clinical practice, leadership and education. Position Overview
In collaboration with the members, staff, and elected leaders of BCNU, the incumbent provides support to BCNU’s efforts to promote truth and reconciliation, cultural safety, and diversity, equity and inclusion within the structures and culture of the organization, and within the workplaces and communities of our members.
Key Responsibilities
- Assists with the development, implementation, and monitoring of strategies for advancing truth and reconciliation, cultural safety, diversity, equity and inclusion, and human rights within the structures and culture of BCNU and within the workplaces and communities of our members.
- Provides facilitation, coaching and operational support to BCNU’s human rights and equity (HR&E) caucuses and networks, and the members who lead them, in accordance with their needs and stage of group/leadership development. Directly supports capacity building within the caucuses and networks through involvement (as mutually appropriate) in their planning, outreach, and project activities.
- Fosters relationships within BCNU to strengthen organizational commitment in advancing truth and reconciliation, cultural safety, and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
- Builds relationships with counterparts in other unions and organizations engaged in equity and diversity work to keep informed of initiatives, trends and approaches in equity education and promotion, and to build strategic alliances to advance the overall work of HR&E.
- Plays an advisory role in relation to BCNU’s equity-oriented educational efforts.
- Assists in organizing BCNU’s annual HR&E and Practice Conferences, establishing the theme, pedagogical design, agenda, and speakers.
- Assists in the preparation and presentation of reports to the governing Council and acts as a resource person to the Council on equity promotion and health policy matters.
- Monitors and analyzes legislative and regulatory developments and identifies issues of interest or concern to BCNU members and drafts reports/backgrounders as required.
- Communicates with organizations concerning health and nursing issues.
- Promotes BCNU priorities regarding healthcare and nursing policies.
- Writes and/or edits relevant committee/policy communication with members. Develops policy papers as required.
- Contributes policy news to BCNU publications.
- Provides work direction to assigned clerical and administrative staff. Participates in the efficient and cooperative use of resources and personnel.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
