POSITION: Humane Education School Programs Specialist
STATUS: Permanent; Full-Time
SHIFT: 35 hours per week
LOCATION: Vancouver, BC – Primarily Remote
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS YOU NEED TO HAVE:

  • University degree in education; and minimum of 8 years’ related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer. Related experience includes but is not limited to:
  • working with youth
  • working in the education sector
  • curriculum development; building lessons, activities and other resources
  • creating and executing proposals and strategies
  • influencing decision-makers to create meaningful change
  • providing advice and guidance to those doing direct service delivery
  • Working knowledge of the B.C. curriculum and principles of social change, equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral; comfortable giving presentations and public-speaking
  • Creative, energetic, with good problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, meet priorities and to work within a demanding work schedule with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work with internal and external parties from diverse backgrounds in a positive and respectful manner
  • Must be willing to complete a criminal record check with vulnerable sector check
  • Competent computer skills utilizing Microsoft 365, particularly Microsoft Teams; familiarity with Canva, Adobe Suite and/or web design are assets
  • Assets include: experience working with children of diverse learning and behavioural needs; experience with animals; familiarity with creating digital content
  • Philosophical alignment with the vision, mission, values, and strategic directions of the BC SPCA

Responsibilities:

  • Develops annual education plan.
  • Prioritizes principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation in keeping with BC SPCA policies, expectations, and overall strategies in this regard.
  • Develops and disseminates B.C. curriculum-linked lessons and materials for teachers to use in classrooms.
  • Develops, coordinates and/or delivers professional development materials and presentations for teachers at conferences, pre-service teaching classes, etc.
  • Oversees and contributes content in the production teacher publications such as Meow! magazine, e-Teacher monthly newsletter, and other materials for educator audiences.
  • Builds a case for support of humane education at school district level and participates in any related activities to influence decisions makers, such as developing connections with stakeholders, developing and distributing pedagogy-based materials to promote understanding of Humane Education and its connections to B.C. curriculum.
  • Prepares and delivers training to Regional Humane Educators in school program content, protocols and strategies.
  • Provides advice and guidance as required.
  • Receives feedback and incorporates ideas into future annual education plans and strategies around school programs.
  • Assists with troubleshooting with any areas of challenge in delivery.
  • Pursues partnerships with compatible organizations to leverage opportunities to deliver humane education. Partnerships may include, but are not limited to post-secondary teaching programs, Live It Earth, community organizations, and educational organizations.
  • Extends humane education support to Northern and remote/rural communities: includes building relationships with BC SPCA animal centre managers, educators, partnering organizations within the community, etc.
  • Provides suggestions and ideas and where approved, may be required to lead and/or be part of implementation.
  • Assists with the strategies and development of programs to take advantage of opportunities to advance the professionalism of humane education, as identified (for example, doing research and creating a proposal for development of a BC SPCA post-secondary humane education teaching credential for certified teachers).
  • Helps to design and implement metrics for the evaluation of teacher-based education programs.
  • Completes various administrative tasks, including but not limited to: report writing, record keeping, updating humane education section of the BC SPCA website, providing social media messaging, assisting with the dissemination of program materials and budget planning.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
