JOB SUMMARY

Subject teachers are responsible for maximizing the academic progress of the students they teach, working with colleagues to participate fully in the development of the department. They promote a positive, purposeful, and professional working atmosphere that encourages cooperation and challenge, whilst valuing the contribution that individuals make to the success of the department. The Computing Department is very well-resourced and forms part of the extremely successful Mathematics and Computing Faculty. The department has developed a rigorous curriculum that provides an abundance of challenges and opportunities to develop coding skills for all students. Computer Science is a popular subject at IGCSE and coding and computational thinking are embedded more thoroughly into our curriculum. The Computing Department’s aim is not only to equip students for today’s society, but also for the future, and to teach in such a way that celebrates innovative ideas, stimulates forward-thinking, and exposes students to the enormous potential of computers and their applications in related fields such as electronics and engineering.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Appropriate degree, with TRCN and relevant IT certifications/ Cambridge certification.
  • Familiar with hybrid teaching and learning
  • Minimum three years of teaching experience
  • Familiarity with the Cambridge and Nigerian Curriculum (INCCE, NECO, WAEC, IGCSE , and/or A Levels as appropriate)
  • Passion for teaching and commitment to educating the whole child
  • A high level of professionalism and consideration for the well-being of children
  • Recent and consistent involvement in extracurricular activities
  • Respect for all members of a school community, irrespective of position, gender, age and ethnic background
  • Previous experience working with students for whom English is not their first language
  • A positive and solution-focused attitude to working life
  • A clean police check and no question regarding suitability to work with children

DESIRABLE SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES:

  • Excellent and effective communication skills
  • Ability to continue to raise the profile of computing in the school
  • Ability to extend high-flying students beyond the age-specific curriculum and develop suitable intervention strategies to suit their needs
  • Ability to teach IGCSE and A Level Computer Science
  • Ability to teach IGCSE ICT
  • A passion for the new computing curriculum
  • A competent programmer up to A Level standard (preferably in Python) who should be able to teach object-oriented programming and have a good understanding of ADTs such as stacks, queues, hash tables and binary trees
  • The ability to extend and motivate able students to go beyond the IGCSE and A Level syllabus
  • Willingness to take part in subject-related extracurricular after-school activities, weekends, online, and holidays including the Programming Club, STEAM, and Tech Club
  • Willingness to offer regular revision sessions for students outside of normal teaching hours (at lunchtimes and after school) in the lead-up to examinations
  • An enthusiasm to continue learning and improving own knowledge in computing and teaching
    Remuneration: NGN 180,000 and above

Responsibilities:

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Encourage high standards in all aspects of school life, particularly in student progress
  • Contribute to the effective and efficient running of the school
  • Promote a school culture that is positive, purposeful, and professional
  • Support and motivate students, teachers, and other school employees
  • Encourage consultation, review, and improvement

TEACHING AND LEARNING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan and prepare well-structured, clearly presented lessons appropriate to the abilities of all students and the syllabus being taught
  • Make sure that the classroom is a stimulating environment that facilitates learning
  • Generate enthusiasm for the subject being taught and inspire all students to work to their potential
  • Liaise with the Head of Department and learning support where a student may have special educational needs and with the form tutor and pastoral team if a student is experiencing pastoral difficulties
  • Promote high standards of behavior by encouraging a positive, proactive approach to study and build productive relationships with students
  • Set homework according to policy and pertinent to the student’s ability and wider workload
  • Promote high standards of organisation
  • Be punctual to lessons
  • Promote high standards in the use of English as the common language and help develop English for academic progress
  • Provide high-quality, accurate, constructive, and targeted information to parents at Parents Evenings, in subject reports, incidental meetings, and communications
  • Assess, record, and monitor the progress of all students according to faculty guidelines to provide accurate information to parents in a variety of forms, as and when necessary
  • Maintain materials and resources as needed

RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE DEPARTMENT AND SCHOOL:

  • Be respectful of the needs of colleagues and the department with regard to cooperation, collegiality, deadlines, and team cohesion
  • Participate positively in departmental meetings, follow policies and generally contribute to the effective and efficient running of the department
  • Promote professional dialogue, share ideas about teaching and learning, and support other teachers in developing good practices and new approaches and initiatives
  • Take part in, and contribute to, INSET activities offered in the department and by the school
  • Enthusiastically contribute to cross-curricular links and initiatives, and Leadership in Action activities
  • Be involved in new responsibilities within the department as part of an ongoing process of professional development
  • Keep up to date with developments in the subject, edtech, and education generally
  • Handle school media and social media projects
  • Set up the ICT systems and networks required to support the school’s academic and administrative functions, and its stakeholders like staff, students, and parents.
  • On an ongoing basis, ensure that ICT services and functions provided are reliable and secure, and particularly, the security and safekeeping of the school’s confidential information and data stored in the school’s ICT systems.
  • Organise, schedule, and implement ICT tasks, projects, and facilities, to ensure the stability and efficiency of all ICT operations within the School.
  • Ensure appropriate and acceptable use of the school’s network and compliance with the school’s data retention and management policy.
  • Develop and implement an annual ICT operation plan within the budget allocated and manage key projects and upgrades for the year.
  • Manage our in-house ICT staff and/or insourced/outsourced staff from service providers, and ensure the proper prioritization and allocation of tasks to members of the team.
  • Liaise and manage suppliers of academic and non-academic services, systems, and software.
  • Organise and maintain agreements for hardware and software.
  • Troubleshoot development and production problems across a variety of environments and operating platforms
  • Document development tasks, including specific changes, for use in project reports and technical documentation
  • Database management and ICT facilities management
  • Online workspace organization, coordination, and management.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Head of Department, Head of Faculty or members of the Senior Leadership Team and any duties that the Head Master deems necessary for the effective operation of the school
