About the job:

The Import Trade Compliance Associate is responsible for ensuring that all imported goods comply with international trade regulations, customs requirements, and company policies. This role involves managing import documentation, coordinating with customs brokers and government agencies, and staying up to date with changes in trade laws and regulations. The Import Trade Compliance Associate will play a key role in mitigating risks associated with import activities and ensuring smooth and efficient import operations. The following are key responsibilities for this position:

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable import regulations, including customs laws, tariffs, and trade agreements. Monitor changes in regulations and update company procedures accordingly.
  • Documentation Management: Receive, review, and maintain all necessary import documentation, including bills of lading, commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and other required documents.
  • Customs Coordination: Liaise with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and government agencies to ensure timely clearance of imported goods. Resolve any issues related to customs clearance.
  • Tariff Classification: Determine and assign appropriate Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes for imported goods. Work with internal stakeholders to classify new products accurately.
  • Trade Compliance Audits: Conduct periodic internal audits to ensure compliance with import regulations and company policies. Identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.
  • Record Keeping: Work with trade compliance auditor to maintain accurate records of all import transactions, including documentation, communication with customs, and compliance activities. Ensure records are accessible for audits.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks associated with import activities and develop strategies to mitigate them. Collaborate with the legal and compliance teams to address any regulatory challenges.
  • Training and Support: Provide training and guidance to internal teams on import compliance procedures, regulations, and best practices.
  • Cost Management: Work with the finance department to monitor import-related costs, including duties, taxes, and fees. Identify opportunities to reduce costs without compromising compliance.
  • Vendor Management: Collaborate with suppliers to ensure they understand and comply with import requirements. Address any issues related to product classification, documentation, or other compliance concerns.
