Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of Associate Director Indigenous Student Success (ADISS), with a soft-line to the Senior Advisor, Indigenous curriculum and pedagogies, the Special Projects Officer will manage existing and develop new projects aimed at enhancing and expanding educational pathways and access for First Nations, Inuit and Métis students at McGill. Invested in Indigenous student and Indigenous community engagement, the Special Projects Officer (Indigenous Education) will develop and maintain a wrap-around-services model that integrates the financial and non-financial supports required to recruit, retain and support FNIM students through to graduation. The incumbent will play a key role in supporting the ADISS in developing programs to increase Indigenous student enrolment and retention, developing mentorship opportunities, and supporting ongoing internal and Indigenous community relationships that are integral to the development of new and existing Indigenous-focused academic programing.
Primary Responsibilities:

Advancing Indigenous Student Success (80%)

  • Provide recommendations on implementation of new initiatives developed by ADISS at McGill which support Indigenous students and stem from McGill’s 52 Calls to Action.
  • Manage and implement aspects of McGill’s Indigenous Tuition Initiative including the operationalization and coordination of activities from all the project’s partners.
  • Develop and implement strategies and initiatives that support relationship building with Indigenous community partners and McGill stakeholders integral to student support.
  • Manages implementation of University-wide policies and practices that are Indigenous-student specific and/or will have a considerable impact on Indigenous students at McGill (e.g. Indigenous membership/citizenship validation).
  • Identifies gaps and streamlines communications/information transfers between Indigenous community and McGill units in relation to student initiatives.
  • Develops and oversees the internal systems and tools (infrastructure) to manage data generated by new initiatives aimed at increasing Indigenous student support.
  • Prepare statistical reports on special initiatives/projects towards unit reporting, ongoing project evaluation and planning.
  • Develops and implements new initiatives internally and externally (e.g. working with Indigenous media, establishing presence within Indigenous community and engaging with Indigenous leadership such as education authorities to share information that affects their students)
  • Contributes to key communications efforts organized within the Office of Indigenous Initiatives.

Supporting the Advancement of Indigenous Curriculum and Knowledges (20%)

  • Develop and manage the Advancing Indigenous Knowledges and Community Relations Program, which supports the respectful and culturally relevant inclusion of Indigenous knowledges through visitor/event initiatives across the university.
  • Develop and implement an equitable and coordinated approach to Indigenous student/community member led initiatives/projects aimed at providing a culturally enriching and culturally competent learning spaces.
  • The Special Projects Officer will also prepare, manage, and execute day-to-day financial tasks related to their responsibilities, and perform other duties as assigned.
