Description:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12 plus graduation from a one year community college program in a related area such as a social services field. Up to and including 6 months related experience.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the issues related to students with special needs is required.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Good time management, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide personal care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The Department of Accessible Education and Training (AET) is seeking a non-regular part-time Individual Support Worker for the Penticton campus.
A minimum CEA or HSW Certificate is required in addition to 6 months of experience working with students with special needs.

1. Supports a student(s) with special needs in or out of the classroom in the Accessible Education & Training class or in the SAME Program providing as needed some combination of:

  • mobility support
  • orientation support (for visually impaired students)
  • personal care
  • communication support
  • social support
  • study skills such as organizational skills and time management
  • learning assistance
  • finance management
  • anger management
  • conflict resolutio

Responsibilities:

  1. Supports a student(s) with special needs in or out of the classroom in the Accessible Education & Training class or in the SAME Program providing as needed some combination of:
  • mobility support
  • orientation support (for visually impaired students)
  • personal care
  • communication support
  • social support
  • study skills such as organizational skills and time management
  • learning assistance
  • finance management
  • anger management
  • conflict resolution
  1. Supports the instructor with the modification of learning materials, material delivery, and evaluation such as:
  • preparing modified materials for class
  • meetings with instructor to review student needs and progress
  • discuss with the instructor accommodations and modifications
  • organize exam accommodations, supervise tests, dictate and or scribes tests as needed and mark test as required.
  1. Functions as liaison with the student’s instructors, caregivers, community network and the ASE department to:
  • ensure clear communication between student(s) and instructor(s)
  • keep in contact with caregivers regarding student needs
  • communicate with relevant agencies when necessary
  • report regularly to the ASE department Chairperson.
  1. Performs other related duties as required.
