JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Passion for Health and Safety as demonstrated by a commitment to professional learning and development in this field of study
  • Experience in current Occupational Hygiene sampling techniques and methods
  • Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Sciences or any closely related field
  • CIH, ROH, CRSP or equivalent safety & IH designation would be an asset
  • Experience with Designated Substances

JOB SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Provides a highly visible presence, high standards and leadership
  • In-depth knowledge of all relevant legislation and standards in the Province of Ontario
  • Proficiency in using industrial hygiene monitoring equipment and software.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Extensive safety training with a focus on Industrial Hygiene
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, time management, problem-solving, negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Willingness to take on new challenges and work in a team environment
  • Self-motivated problem solver
  • Excellent Computer skills, particularly MS Office (Word/Excel/Access)
  • A good working knowledge of the steel production process would be an asset.
  • Must be able to develop company standards in cooperation with others and plan/facilitate integration of new technology.
  • Must demonstrate strong interdependent team building skills, able to work with others to achieve results.
  • Must have a working knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to Occupational Hygiene.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Stelco has one immediate opening for an Industrial Hygiene Coordinator. This position will use business practices to ensure that occupation health and safety is integrated into daily routine management. The successful applicant will assist in providing leadership in the Occupational Hygiene discipline to help implement and continuously improve H&S systems that support a Healthy Workplace, through the development and maintenance of policies and programs. Safety is the Core Value of Stelco and the individual will make Safety the #1 priority in the execution of all work activities, including monitoring contractor/vendor safety in support of work efforts.
The successful candidate will report to the Manager, Safety and Industrial Hygiene for Stelco.

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts and coordinates qualitative and quantitative exposure surveys, interprets sampling results and prepares technical reports related to a wide variety of chemical, biological and physical agents.
  • Develops and maintains occupational hygiene related programs, including designated substance control programs.
  • Prepares exposure histories for occupational disease claims.
  • Responds to and assists area leaders with resolving occupational hygiene related employee concerns.
  • Develops and delivers occupational hygiene related training material.
  • Reviews SDS information for material approval and updates company SDSs as required.
  • Work at both facility locations in Hamilton & Nanticoke
  • Provide leadership in developing, communicating and implementing Stelco’s vision for health and safety in Stelco facilities
  • Develop, coordinate and facilitate the implementation of an effective health and safety management system that complies with all applicable legislative requirements, best practices and Company requirements
  • Acts as a Company representative for any/all Ministry of Labour IH related investigations and visits and issue follow-up documents to Divisions/Management
  • Identifies and assists with the delivery and coordination of Industrial Hygiene related Training programs for the Division, Department and/or plant
  • Participate in Hazardous Job Meetings for tasks involving significant risks
  • Participate in the pre-startup safety review of new facilities, equipment or processes in conjunction with Engineering, Maintenance and Operating personnel
  • Research industry best practices i.e. CSA, ASME, ANSI, ACGIH, NFPA, MOL Guidelines, etc.
