Description:
The Space Health And Community (SHAC) Lab in the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University is seeking a full time research assistant. The research assistant will join a National Institutes of Health grant-sponsored study focused on the spatial dimensions of historical structural racism and neighborhood conditions across Michigan (1930-2020). This grant is led by Dr. Amber L. Pearson and Dr. Alex Burt.
The SHAC lab has three strategic priorities, to: 1) lead health-related research that can be used to create a healthier and more equitable society and repair past injustices; 2) increase capacity for a diverse set of students to conduct research and to enhance their ability to engage as global citizens; and 3) inform policy and investment in low-income, minoritized neighborhoods, given the disproportionate levels of chronic disease risk in such communities.
This position is ideal for a candidate with proven knowledge and experience in geographic information systems (GIS) and will be supervised by Dr. Pearson.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business , Statistics or Mathematics with relevant course work in computer programming; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in programming, database management or data collection; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge equivalent to what would normally be acquired through completion of a four-year college degree program in geography with a focus in GIS, or three to five years of GIS work experience, or a combination of education and experience. The candidate must have demonstrated experience using Esri ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Desktop. The candidate must have overall knowledge of GIS data, including vector and raster data, database tables, relationship classes, etc.
Desired qualifications include experience or interest in image to text readers, contextual knowledge of Michigan cities, and archival geospatial work
