The Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco (AGFT) Division of Service Nova Scotia is the regulatory body charged with administering Part II of the Gaming Control Act, parts of the Liquor Control Act, and the Theatres and Amusements Act. The AGFT issues approximately 13,000 licenses annually, and provides in counter service to approximately 3,100 annually.
PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Reporting to the Regional Manager, you will perform inspections for the purpose of ensuring compliance with the Gaming Control, Liquor Control, Theatre & Amusements and the Smoke Free Places Acts, and their associated regulations. This will include conducting complex investigations, and thorough inspections of premises and gaming devices. In addition, you will review business and financial records, verify applications for licenses, and complete thorough reports, including recommendations. You will also provide advice and guidance to clients and respond to enquiries relating to regulatory compliance and adherence to the regulations. Building a strong working relationship with the public, licensees, other compliance agencies, police agencies and other levels of government is essential.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
You have completed training in a trade or technical area, with a minimum of six years of related experience. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable. You have experience analyzing and interpreting legislation, extracting and applying licensing requirements, and applying legislative provisions to various business operators. In addition, you demonstrate:
- A high degree of judgment and accuracy;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal);
- Diplomacy, resourcefulness with a focus on clients;
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work with minimum supervision;
- A professional attitude at all times.
The following would be considered assets: experience within the regulated areas of Liquor, Gaming, Smoke, Theatres and Amusement, and a good working knowledge of data spreadsheet and work processing software.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
