Salary: $50.04 per hour, as per the NSPI/IBEW Collective Agreement

We are currently looking for an Instrumentation Technician &/or Industrial Electrician (Power Plant Technician II - Shift) as per Article 6.12 of the CA. We will accept 6.12 (1) E or G. (Instrumentation Technician & Industrial Electrician or Instrument Technician and Electrical Technician). The successful candidate will join our Power Production team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Controls Supervisor, you will be responsible for routine maintenance, trouble shooting, calibration and installation of instrumentation and monitoring equipment throughout the generating station.
Key elements of this role include::

As an Instrumentation Technician &/or Industrial Electrician (Power Plant Technician II - Shift):

  • You will be responsible for ensuring the plant operates safely, as prescribed in NSPI Operating Practices and the Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations, and within the environmental stipulations prescribed in the Environmental Operating Permit.
  • Stack climbing and repair work on equipment throughout the generating station and participation in specialized environmental testing routines will also be required.
  • You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.
  • You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.
These skills will make you successful::

You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:

  • Candidates must either be a full-time employee recognized as a PPTII (Instrument Technician & Industrial Electrician or Electrical Technician) by Nova Scotia Power or possess 2 of the following as long as one is under Instrumentation and one Electrical.
  • A Diploma in Instrumentation Controls Technology
  • Red Seal Journeyperson Instrumentation /Control Technician
  • A Certificate as an Instrument Controls Technician from an accredited program.
  • Red Seal Industrial Electrician
  • A Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology

If no fully qualified candidates apply, consideration may be given to employees recognized as a PPTI Instrumentation Technician by Nova Scotia Power. Please note, depending on capacity at the time of hire the successful PPT II candidate may or may not be indentured.

  • A minimum of two years’ experience maintaining instrumentation and electrical equipment as found in a generating station or similar industry is required.
  • You must be willing to enroll in an apprenticeship program if required. You must have proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments.
  • You must be proficient with troubleshooting electrical / electronic equipment and software use and programming in an industrial setting.
  • You must be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills, a strong computer aptitude and the ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands.
  • Applicants will be required to demonstrate acceptable color vision for operation of control monitoring equipment.

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:

  • Must be able to lift 60 lbs. from the floor to waist level on a minimal basis.
  • Able to carry 60 lbs. with both hands on a minimal basis, with the overall ability to carry between 12-16 lbs. on an occasional basis.
  • Able to push and pull between 50-100 lbs. with whole and upper body strength on an occasional basis.
  • Be able to work from heights using fall protection. Stack work up to 250’ is routine.
  • Perform static reaching at waist level on a frequent basis, below waist level on an occasional basis and from shoulder to overhead level on a minimal basis.
  • Perform frequent standing, walking, sitting, and neck flexion movements.
  • Perform occasional sitting, bending, stooping, forward flexional movements and neck rotation movements.
  • Perform squatting, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and neck extension movements on a minimal basis.
  • Ability to perform fine finger manipulation and possess a simple grasp while performing pinching motions.
