Description:

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. From the seabed to outer space, you can contribute to work that matters with a company where diversity, equity and inclusion are shared values. We’re committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that’s welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.
We are Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T): Boeing’s global research and development team creating and implementing innovative technologies that make the impossible possible and enabling the future of aerospace. We are engineers and technicians, skilled scientists and bold innovators; Join us and put your passion, determination, and skill to work building the future!

TheFutureIsBuiltHere #ChangeTheWorld

Within BR&T, Boeing’s Solid State Electronics Development organization (SSED) performs photonics and microelectronics technology development and design for aerospace systems. We develop integrated photonics, digital, analog, RF Systems on Chip (SoCs) for radar, navigation, electronic warfare, communications, processing, and other electronic systems. These systems are used on Boeing airborne, terrestrial, and satellite platforms. Designs are implemented with state of the art semiconductor process technologies including silicon photonics, CMOS, InP, GaAs, GaN, and SiGe. SSED uses external wafer fabrication but performs design (architecture, RTL, synthesis, circuits, physical design, verification, packaging and test) in house. SSED has numerous microelectronics projects, funded both by internal Boeing customers and external Government Science and Technology (S&T) customers. SSED’s large staff of microelectronics and photonics engineers conduct research and designs microelectronics hardware in support of these projects.
We are seeking an Integrated Photonics Engineer to engage in the research and development of photonics enabling components and complex photonics integrated circuits (in various technologies e.g. silicon, InP, LiNbO, other relevant material). The candidate will take responsibility for the development process for complex photonic devices and systems-on-chip, from design through fabrication, testing and analysis. As a member of our design team, you’ll be working alongside other experienced photonics designers with strong records of delivering innovative photonic device designs and large-scale silicon photonics circuits. This position will be based in Huntington Beach, CA or El Segundo, CA.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
  • 3+ years of experience working in photonics, photonic design, and the physics of photonic components
  • 3+ years of tool experience with analysis tools (i.e., PSpice, MATLAB, MATHCAD, ANSYS, COMSOL, Mentor Graphics electrical tools, Saber, Zuken E3, Xilinx Vivad)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (DESIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • 10+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with designing and optimizing integrated photonic circuits and systems
  • Familiarity with fabrication or packaging processes for photonic devices, such as lithography, etching, and deposition and experience taping out designs to a foundry
  • Proven ability to drive requirements and implanting it in circuit and system
  • Experience in RF design, test and characterization of photonic devices.
  • Solid programming skills in Python or MATLAB, or C/C++ for data analysis and simulation
  • Good understanding of general concepts in physics, especially in optics or electromagnetics.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot and debug complex photonic systems
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Strong understanding of general concepts in fiber optics and integrated optics.
  • Experience with designing and characterizing photonic devices for specific applications, such as telecommunications, sensing, or data centers
  • Knowledge of advanced photonic design techniques, such as inverse design methods or machine learning-based optimization
  • Familiarity with photonic integration platforms, such as silicon photonics or indium phosphide
  • Experience with designing and testing high-speed photonic devices and systems
  • Knowledge of optical communication systems and standards, such as DWDM or coherent detection
  • Experience with designing and optimizing photonic components for manufacturability and yield improvement
  • Familiarity with reliability and failure analysis techniques for photonic devices

Responsibilities:

  • Technically lead or support execution of integrated photonics Research & Development programs, in collaboration with other engineers in the team and SSED portfolio managers and program managers
  • Develop new design approaches and innovate on both device-level design and system-level optimization.
  • Contribute to test development and lead the test data analysis of devices to correlate design with measurements.
  • Collaborate with foundry partner and all other functional teams in the organization to deliver co-designed and co-optimized photonics systems.
  • Participate in development of SSED strategies and roadmaps - technical and business (e.g. new technology areas, partnerships, make/buy trades)
  • Actively engage and regularly meet with customers (external & internal, current & prospective) and partners to shape SSED business opportunities by identifying and understanding the technical needs, budget requirements, and roadmaps and connecting SSED capabilities, accomplishments, and roadmaps with customers & partners
  • Prepare technical presentations and brief them to customers, partners and technical leadership teams
  • Lead development and delivery of white papers / ROMs and proposals to customers, writing invention disclosures and publishing papers
  • Collaborate with SSED functional management, portfolio management, and lab management to define and secure the resources needed to execute microelectronics Research & Development programs (e.g. personnel, facilities, software, laboratory equipment)
  • Regularly present technical findings to customers and their technical advisors
  • Collaborate with customers to re-vector execution plans based on technical learning and evolving constraints, risks, and opportunities.
  • Mentor junior engineers on technical and program leadership.
  • Foster a culture of importing best technical and leadership practices
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
