Description:

Applications are invited for the following post: Interim Deputy President and Registrar, 1FTE, Specified purpose contract
The challenges of our time demand leadership and vision.
That was the case too back in 1845, at the height of the Great Irish Famine, when our university was founded at a time of profound social and ecological challenge. 175 years later, we continue to build upon a long tradition of scholarship and discovery that confronts the problems of our time and serves the public good, empowering our people, city and region to prosper.
Today, the University of Galway community comprises 19,000 students from over 100 countries and 2,500 staff, one-in-five of whom came to Galway from overseas. With around 110,000 alumni and over 3,000 research collaborations globally, our international reach and impact is significant, and growing.
As the Chief Academic Officer, the Interim Deputy President and Registrar occupies the most senior position within this university community, after the President, and is responsible for the leadership and management of the academic strategy and business across four Colleges and 18 Schools.
Ours is a distinctive university in a unique location. We are proud of the contribution we make to Galway’s reputation as an internationally recognised centre of excellence for medtech, data science, culture and creativity, climate and oceans, public policy, and innovation.
University of Galway takes pride and joy in our unique role in leading higher education and research in the Irish language, and we appreciate the importance of thriving Irish-speaking communities in the Gaeltacht and beyond. We are recognised globally for the leadership we bring to Irish language study, research, archives and advocacy, which is enhanced by our three Gaeltacht centres, located in the Irish-speaking communities of Galway and Donegal. We recognise the distinctive and positive value of the Irish language as part of our culture and identity. We work with our communities, including through our three Gaeltacht centres, to enhance our bilingual campus and share our passion for the Irish language with the world.
Our staff and students are focused on the urgent need for greater sustainability, and we are counted among the Top 50 universities globally for our progress towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. As well as leading the delivery of the broader academic mission, the Interim Deputy President and Registrar will offer leadership in these two distinctive areas of strategic importance and in other emerging areas of strategy.
Recent years have seen a major growth in interdisciplinary research, including industry partnerships in key areas. In 2021, we spent a record €70m on research activity, as part of a total university budget of €350m. Major capital projects currently in development include the construction of a new Library, which comes under the remit of the Interim Deputy President and Registrar. In tandem with these landmark buildings, further investment in new facilities and technologies, including through our €13m Student Digital Pathways project, promise to transform how we teach and engage with our students in the years ahead. The Interim Deputy President and Registrar leads this further enhancement of teaching and learning at Ollscoil na Gaillimhe - University of Galway.
We do all of this work guided by our mission to serve the public good and by our four core values, as they were debated and defined by our university community: respect, openness, sustainability and excellence. In addition, we are committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive working environment for all, premised on our values and strategic objectives. At University of Galway, equality, diversity and inclusion is progressed through policies, education and awareness-raising, targeted initiatives and action plans. Our representative staff networks are an integral aspect of creating a supportive workplace and play a key role in our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
The challenges – and the opportunities – of our time demand leadership and vision.
The successful candidate for Interim Deputy President and Registrar will have held a senior academic position with an exemplary track record of academic leadership, coupled with significant management experience, including leading transformative positive change.
The successful candidate will be required to commence in the role on the 9th September 2024.
