Description:

OVERVIEW:

The Salvation Army (TSA) is one of the largest and oldest poverty-fighting organizations in the world. It has been a leader in services in San Francisco for over 140 years. In 2023, the Golden State Division of TSA, headquartered in San Francisco, has:

  • Served over 700,000 people in 19 California counties through its services at 60 community and social service centers; 25 housing and treatment programs; and 1 camp and conference center
  • Partnered with over 45,000 volunteers, and employed 435 staff
  • Piloted The Way Out, a solution to the homeless crisis in San Francisco that is backed by prominent philanthropic, political, civic, and corporate leaders and has attracted national attention
  • Allocated a budget of $80 million, operating with an accumulated surplus

The Interim Divisional Director of Development (IDOD) has the responsibility to successfully lead all elements of the Golden State Divisional Development Department, including:

  • Fundraising (operating, major and capital gifts; planned giving; fundraising events; direct marketing; digital fundraising; corporate giving; and foundation grants)
  • Public relations, marketing, social media, and advertising.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, with a minimum of eight years of progressive fundraising professional experience, including demonstrated leadership and a strong track record of success.
  • Direct experience raising major gifts from high net worth individuals and experience with capital campaign fundraising models.
  • Proven expertise in developing and maintaining positive relationships with diverse individuals, including executives, leadership volunteers, wealthy donors, internal colleagues and stakeholders, and Salvation Army leadership.
  • CA driver’s license (required)

  • Effective interpersonal, conversational, and presentation skills, demonstrating professional maturity, emotional intelligence, situational awareness, excellent writing abilities, and strong case development and gift solicitation skills.
  • A leader who enjoys problem-solving, thinks strategically and creatively is goal-oriented, and takes initiative with good follow-through.
  • A good manager who demonstrates a strategic mindset, balancing attention to analysis, details, and metrics with higher-level goal-setting and planning, without micro-managing.
  • A fundraiser who is comfortable with direct leadership donor and volunteer interactions, who models good stewardship communication practices, and who is able to effectively ask, lead the gift conversation, network for connections, facilitate a team approach, and rally others who can open doors
  • A team leader, able to check ego at the door, with an ability to effectively motivate staff, officer leaders, and key volunteers to collaborate for the successful achievement of department and organizational goals
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout the Division.
  • Ability to work extended hours during busy times, occasional weekends and some holiday hours particularly around The Salvation Army’s busy Christmas season.
  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage stressful conditions with poise, courtesy, tact, and professionalism.
  • Skill managing and prioritizing multiple projects in an organized and efficient manner to meet tight deadlines.
  • High levels of discretion and an ability to maintain confidentiality around sensitive information.
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office tools, Google suite and familiarity with donor management software and email applications. Comfort working personally with the donor CRM and ability to learn new software (the Army uses Portfolio as its CRM.)

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. (usually file boxes)

Responsibilities:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages the total operation of the divisional development department, supervising all functions and overseeing all staff within the department
  • Consults with leadership to understand organizational priorities and to develop strategies that benefit the Army and align with donor interests.
  • Works with each member of the development team, as well as volunteers and consultants as appropriate, to create and lead an effective department team atmosphere that encourages cooperation, strategic thinking, regular communication, professional growth, and creativity and that instills healthy accountability around advancing the mission and meeting goals.
  • Reviews documents, data, and the donor pipeline that has been developed for the upcoming capital campaign
  • Prepare a comprehensive framework/approach for the project after reviewing shared information and request additional data/information/samples, as needed to fully form the consulting service impact, and successfully implement the project
  • Drives and develops strategies to ensure projects continue as outlined, suggesting adjustments as necessary
  • Provide methodological approach for evaluating, rating, cultivating and relationship management of individual prospects
  • Conduct standing coaching meetings with development team personnel to provide strategies and accountability, including preparation for and follow-up from donor or prospect meetings
  • Tracks project and donor progress, compiling data, reporting, and sharing regularly
  • Participate in campaign meetings, as invited
  • Provide real-time technical assistance by Teams, phone, email, or text as needed.
  • Other related duties as required
