We are looking to hire an individual with a passion for the natural and applied sciences to join our team as an Intermediate Aquatic Biologist in our Edmonton, AB office. This position will be temporary and will provide coverage for an employee on maternity leave, with the possibilty to transition into a permanent role. This position offers an interesting variety of office and field work on a diversified range of projects that include biophysical inventories, environmental impact assessments, and monitoring of environmental effects. Although the position will be based in AB, opportunities to work on projects located in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and the northern Territories will arise.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a B.Sc. in biology or ecology, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience, preferably in environmental consulting, doing environmental monitoring, aquatic and riparian surveys, biophysical assessment, surface water quality sampling, fish and wildlife salvage.
  • Registered as a Professional Biologist with the ASPB.
  • Proficient technical writer.
  • A strong track record in Health and Safety management on projects.
  • Knowledge of Alberta and Federal environmental regulations.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and must provide a current drivers abstract.
  • Must be physically capable of working with heavy equipment and sensitive instruments in variable weather and river conditions.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, practicing safe work methods.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, as well as strong written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting biophysical assessments, focusing on fisheries and aquatic habitat, riparian habitat and vegetation, and/or wildlife and wildlife habitat, working with senior biologists.
  • Prepare field sampling permit applications for fish and wildlife salvages, and complete post-salvage reports.
  • Conducting construction Environmental Monitoring, including erosion and sediment control planning and monitoring, water quality sampling and data analysis.
  • Working closely with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and technical experts in biology and environmental sciences.
  • Maintaining existing and developing new client relationships with proven Business Development skills and experience that will include preparing significant proposals and workplans Data analysis and technical reporting (proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Providing technical guidance for junior staff.
  • Working with Project Managers/Discipline Teams to maintain quality control of data.
  • Data analysis and technical reporting (proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Equipment calibration and maintenance.
  • Working outside in varied weather conditions.
  • Willigness to work away from home for extended periods.
  • Excellent attention to detail, and ability to work accurately and quickly to meet deadlines.
  • Be punctual and able to start work early in the morning.
  • Health and Safety for work at the project site.
  • Willingness to work independently and in a team environment.
